Meet Eric Dieter of Movement Strategy in Rino

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Dieter.

Eric, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Movement Strategy with a close friend that I met while attending CU Boulder and studying Advertising. That was back in early 2008.

Early on, we recognized an opportunity to build an agency that focused on social media and how brands could leverage some of these new platforms to build communities and deeper relationships with fans/consumers. Some of our earliest breakthrough opportunities came through Bonnier Corp (Warren Miller Entertainment, Ski Magazine) and Kroenke Sports and Entertainment (Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche). When we started working with these clients, social media was still very new and brands were trying to figure out how to use the platforms. Our role consisted largely of consulting on strategy and early forms of community management.

Fast forward a few years and we now have an office in NYC, LA as well as our Denver location. We’ve evolved a ton since the beginning and have built what we call a ‘Social-Led Creative Agency’. We have seven core values that guide everything we do and we’ve assembled teams of amazingly talented people across each office. Today our client roster includes Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Under Armour, Warner Bros, Punch Bowl Social and a number of other amazing brands.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with building anything, there are ups and downs. The constant for us though, has been making sure that we’re always surrounding ourselves with the best people. It’s a team effort and if you have the right group together you can overcome any challenge.

Early on, the challenges really revolved around acquiring new clients and getting clients to buy into social media as a viable marketing channel. Now that social media is well established and we’ve earned credibility, the challenges are things like maintaining company culture while scaling quickly across various locations.

Please tell us about Movement Strategy.
We partner with brands as their Social Media Agency of Record. This is really all-encompassing – including social media strategy, creative campaigns, content production, paid social, partner and influencer collaboration and delivery of social trends and insights. When we first started Movement Strategy, we committed to being a ‘Social Media Agency’ which was a big differentiator. At a number of agencies social is just another service being offered, to us, it’s the basis all of the work that we do – even if the end campaign ends up being an out-of-home experience or activation.

What we strive for is great creative work that is informed by social insights. We’ve built and evolved a process and departments that ensure we’re sticking to this mission. We also believe in making an impact, not just on the bottom line, but in the world whether that be by getting our clients to do social good or by providing our employees with unique opportunities for growth and development.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We definitely attribute the majority of our success to hard work but there have been times where luck has come into play. For example, one of our first big clients came from my business partner just happening to sit next to a CEO on a flight from NYC to Denver. We still had to pitch and win the business but the opportunity probably wouldn’t have presented itself without being in the right place at the right time. We don’t ever rely on luck but we’ll take it if it comes our way.
