Meet Erica Lindsey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Lindsey.

Erica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved taking photos, but something different happens in my mind when there’s a person in front of the camera. I begin to envision how I want the finished image to look, and everything starts to come together, and it just makes sense. I decided that I wanted to learn more and improve my skills, so I began taking photography classes. Shortly after completing my certification, I decided to make a real go of it as a business. I was living in England at the time, and everything there made me want to take more photos. The countryside, the cobblestone roads, all of the beautiful old architecture. I mainly shot weddings and portraits during the three years I lived there. I’ve lived in various places and traveled quite a lot, which has given me a different perspective and helped me develop my style.

After moving to Colorado a year ago, I knew I wanted to take my business in a slightly different direction. I wanted to do something that would not only set me apart from the other photographers here, but also that makes me genuinely happy. I’ve stopped shooting weddings and now focus on portraits and fashion photography. I have been published in various fashion and beauty magazines and I like to carry that style over to my portrait sessions, with more creativity and high-end editing. So if I’m doing a family or couples session, I want it be unique to them and look good enough to be in a magazine. I put a lot of time into planning the sessions including wardrobe, location and general concept. I also put more time into editing to give the final mages a refined look.

I’m a mother of two crazy yet wonderful kids as well, 4 and 7 years old. They’ve given me loads of insight on how to make photos more fun or even just more manageable for young kids. Of course my son is the child who always does a terrible fake smile in school photos, so I do all of theirs instead now.

I love pretty much everything about photography and try to share that with others, which is why I volunteer. I’ve been fortunate enough to connect with some great causes here. I’ve done photos for The Lockwood Foundation (a local non-profit whose goal is to make adventure accessible to everyone) and Denver Pop Culture Con. I met another group there called Super Healers that visits children in hospitals dressed up as super heroes, and will be volunteering with them soon as well. If you haven’t checked out these organizations yet, I totally recommend it!

Has it been a smooth road?
I love taking photos, editing and interacting with clients, but all of the other business stuff that’s involved can be difficult. I don’t think most people realize just how much goes into it. Taxes, insurance, permits… it can be a lot.

I’m also a single mom, and the busiest times for photography are evenings and weekends. Sometimes that can be tricky, but a lot of the business part and editing can be done from home. My kids are actually my biggest fans and love hearing about my work. I guess we’ll see how long that lasts…

Tell us more about the business.
My business is called Erica Lindsey Photography and I am a portrait and fashion photographer. I specialize in colorful, moody, creative images. I’ve been published in fashion and beauty magazines and I like to carry that style over to my portrait sessions. I also do more editing to have a very refined, finished look in the final images that go to my clients. I put a lot of effort into my clients and my business. I want them to feel amazing when they receive their photos and proud to display them.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next five to ten years I intend to keep working on publications as well as fun, creative portrait sessions. I hope to build up my business and thrive in this area, as it’s become my home and I love it here.
