Meet Erica Roybal of Permanent Makeup Aesthetics Clinic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Roybal.

Erica, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up in a small town in Colorado, I was always that girl with her head in the clouds, gears turning with an entrepreneurial spirit, dreaming of the future. My high school esthetician changed my life for the better healing my acneic skin and spirit. She laid the seed of understanding that esthetics heals deeper than the epidermis.

I always carried a love for beauty in my heart. My first-grade dream job was to someday become a beautician. But in my youth, I decided to pursue biological sciences fully. I have a background as a lab scientist that geared me with the skill set to be exact, precise and understand skin from a histological standpoint. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from Colorado State University. While studying at the university, I had an opportunity to travel and intern in Europe and Asia. It was groundbreaking and revealed different ideas and lifestyles of beauty and innovative modern permanent makeup. I always enjoyed art and had an artistic eye for design. Art is the foundation of modern, quality permanent makeup.

Being introduced to European style permanent makeup and esthetics changed my life trajectory- I knew European style esthetics was where I wanted to spend my life perfecting my craft and hopefully someday mastering. I also witnessed European estheticians being treated like medical professionals, using state of the art technology and extremely knowledgable practitioners in chemistry, skin anatomy and physiology. I wanted to bring this innovation and knowledge home to Colorado.

I opened Permanent Makeup Aesthetics Clinic in July 2017. My goal remains to help individuals to the magnitude my esthetician helped me all the while pushing boundaries of innovation in esthetics. The clinic is where I can express myself with the convergence of beauty, science and art. We have grown to a six-figure business year after year. I continue to develop my skillset by constantly attending trainings. I continuously have estheticians asking for training on a regular basis. As a result, I have pursued becoming a state-approved academy for fundamental permanent makeup certification partnering with another local permanent makeup studio. It is incredible, challenging and humbling to grow as an educator. Helping others when they are in the elementary steps of beginning a new career is the way I have been giving back. Moving into the future my goals are to continue innovating for our clients and helping others in the beauty field offer modern quality esthetics.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been quite a struggle of a road for me with many intersections where I could have called it quits. Not only financially was it risky and challenging to invest in the clinic, but I was the first of many things in my family- first to attend college and graduate and first business owner. Additionally, I did not have the tools or knowledge to run a business or provide high caliber services initially and only learned through experience. I felt my fundamental trainings did not provide me with a strong foundation, so it has been a constant quest for more knowledge to provide the highest caliber of services and to become the best in my industry. I do not require a smooth road or no struggles in the end. I have learned willpower is like water. Nothing can stop it. It will pass through mountains. It falls like a waterfall. But it always gets to the place it desires.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Permanent Makeup Aesthetics Clinic – what should we know?
PMAC combines science and art to provide every client the best permanent makeup design and retention. Our mission is to empower women through evoking self-confidence with permanent makeup. We are constantly looking to improve services and be on the cutting edge of developments and techniques. We have a limited menu of esthetics in order to execute each item to the best of our ability.

Our menu consists of permanent makeup, skincare, tattoo removal, and eyelash services. We are known for these things! We only provide machine work for permanent makeup. We believe and have witnessed firsthand in unskilled hands, hand tools such as microblading create trauma to skin as it cuts the skin. Microblading leaves abrasions in skin that eventually turn into scars leaving this tissue damaged indefinitely. We only work with one point to three-point configured needles making micro-punctures in skin. In this practice, we do little damage to skin. We are most proud of our identity and reputation. We are different from others because we focus on the science and the art of esthetics, the long term results as well. Also, we are friendly and genuinely care about our clients and our work.

We would love to give credit to my clients for trusting in us and for the experience of working on them as time is the best teacher. My clients are my cheerleaders and have made my business what it is. I also would love to thank my significant other, Liam, for believing in me and encouraging me to pursue my dreams. My community is always advocating for my business and its the best feeling in the world to have people in your corner. I have had many teachers and trainers and am incredibly thankful for every person that has helped shape me as a person and shape my skill set.
