Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Beacom.
Sunburnt Studios Founder, Erin Beacom, has been working in the video industry for over seven years. She came up with the idea for an all-female video production company a few years ago while directing a documentary team in Minnesota. Since that time, Erin has refined the idea and really delved into why this was such an important goal for her. Sunburnt Studios was officially opened in Lakewood, CO July 1st, 2020, as an all-female, adventurous video production company.
Currently, Sunburnt Studios is working with companies around the world to create videos that fit their specific values, missions, and needs. Along with offering specialized, high-quality video services, we offer education. The video world is one that we are very familiar with and are working in every day. We help educate clients to understand exactly what they are looking for in expanding video into their brand. Sunburnt Studios also puts an emphasis on educating women and girls who are striving to break into the video and film industry. As our business grows, so will our ability to increase the quality of education we can offer to the women and girls aiming to be the up and coming female directors, cinematographers, line producers, directors of photography, and any other career within the film and video industry.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Sunburnt Studios is a very new company, and it has not been a completely smooth road for us so far. We are very well versed in the video and film industry, but learning every other aspect of running a business has been a whirlwind. I have absolutely annoyed a few legal teams, CPAs, and banking professionals trying to make sure I thoroughly understand everything that I might need to know about starting a company. There has been a huge learning curve over the past few months to make sure I am as prepared as I can be.
I believe in this company with everything that I am, but when starting out, I was terrified that I could fail by not knowing something. So, my initial reaction was to learn everything, which, is impossible to do and extremely overwhelming. I had to take a step back to refocus on the big picture and trust that I would figure things out as they came. Sunburnt Studios is growing right now into a company that I believe many people will be excited to work with and watch grow. We have received so much help and support from the local community, fellow photographers and videographers, female entrepreneurs, family, and friends that we are so thankful for.
Sunburnt Studios – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Sunburnt Studios is an all-female, adventurous video production company. We capture humanity in its truest form, exposing those small, true moments that make your company or brand uniquely different. Currently, we are working with companies around the world to produce specialized videos to their needs, missions, and values. These videos include but are not limited to Real Estate, Commercial, Documentary, Weddings, and Website/Social Media videos. We specialize in Commercial and Documentary videos but use our skills to portray stronger visual storytelling in all kinds of videos.
At the moment, we are most proud of our unique style and vision that is making us stand out among the competition. Personally, my video style has been highly influenced by female video artists, cinematographers, and directors. A few of my popular, well-known influences are Shirin Neshat, Liz Garbus, and Rachel Morrison. I believe these influences can be seen not only in our storytelling style but in every aspect of our company. We spend the time to listen and really get to understand our clients and their goals for their companies. By the time we deliver the final product, we are attached to our clients, their companies, and their victories.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Growing up, my father called me his lucky leprechaun. This nickname has a lot to do with almost every time they put my name into a drawing. It would be pulled out and I would win. It was the “luck of the Irish,” he’d say.
A lot of “luck” happening around Sunburnt Studios, I would not declare luck at all. I would instead call it being prepared or unprepared. This could be with anything: charging or not charging the camera equipment, researching a location or not, hiring dependable assistants, or hiring ones that are not interested. We can prepare for almost every situation and be ready to roll with the punches that come. Things are going to go wrong and we are going to mess up but what really speaks volumes is how we react and adjust from those shortcomings. We will always learn and grow from our failures and overall, I believe that is one of the most important things.
With this question, I feel that I do need to address how lucky I am to be in a position to start this company. The film and video industry is one that is a very privileged industry. It costs a lot to get started and you need to have strong contacts to start getting jobs in this field. This is one of the reasons our education value is so strong. We want to open up the industry. Sunburnt Studios wants to help those women and girls who would otherwise not have the resources and contacts to enter this industry. We want to expand this field because expanding who is able to enter into this industry will also expand in the art, the stories, and the overall quality of videos getting produced.
