Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Jachimiak.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Erin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a wife, mother, photographer, soccer mom, coffee addict, wine lover, and beach bum. I grew up in a little town in Maine called Kennebunk and made the trek across the country to Colorado about 18 years ago. Erin Jachimiak Photography came to be in the Spring of 2013 after my husband gave me six months to follow my passion. I ran with it and have not looked back!
When my children were younger, it was so easy to put everyone else first, to not do the things in life that made me happy. Once I realized how my unhappiness affected not only myself but my family as well, I decided that I needed to put myself first because I deserved that. This made me want to inspire other Mama’s to do the same thing. Being a Mother is a tireless and often thankless job; the fact that we created these perfect little beings is a BIG deal. An accomplishment that deserves to be honored! I love making new mothers feel beautiful and pampered. All the while being able to create perfect little moments amongst the chaos — to celebrate the love and joy that is motherhood.
Has it been a smooth road?
Haha no, I would definitely say it has not been a smooth road. There have been many times where I felt like throwing in the towel. Like my work wasn’t good enough. Newborn and Family photography is a really saturated market around here; it is really hard to stand out. I was always comparing myself and my work to everyone else. I am really critical of myself and I think that carried over to my work as well. I spent most of last summer rebranding, really focusing on my Why and who my ideal clients were. It was a rough process, I never thought having to put into words why I do what I do would be so difficult. I think it was during this process that the lightbulb went on and I stopped trying to be like all of the other photographers. I stopped caring what the trend was at that particular moment and focused on providing my clients with a unique experience unlike any other. Since then, my business has boomed. I have been able to accept clients that have the same vision as I do and refer the others out. I am also slowly delegating things to staff instead of killing myself trying to do it all. It has been very freeing to be able to focus on my photography and let others take care of the day to day tasks.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Erin Jachimiak Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
Erin Jachimiak Photography celebrates motherhood. All stages of it. I focus on creating a one of a kind experience where we celebrate life, babies, bumps and beyond. In the chaos that is most peoples life, Mama’s often fall to the wayside. As a mama myself, I know how easy it is to neglect ourselves, to put our needs and well being last. My goal is for mothers to be able to put everything aside, even if it is just for a brief moment and to focus on these amazing humans that get to call her mom.
I am known for being able to really capture the emotion between a family. I am not an everybody smile and look at the camera kind of photographer. You can get that anywhere. I want to tell your story whatever it is at that particular moment. I like to look at it as an adventure, each one is different and you never know what you will get. When my clients look back at their images from our time together, I want them to feel emotional, to see how their daughters little hand hung onto Moms finger as they ran through a field laughing. Or a new Dad shedding a tear as he snuggles his newborn. This is what I do, and this is what makes me different from everyone else.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Wow, that’s tough. I fear that professional photography is a dying field. I hope I am wrong, but with the technology of cell phone cameras nowadays, everyone thinks they are a photographer. And that is fantastic; I encourage you to take pictures, document the moments. But a professionally trained photographer with correct equipment, knowledge, lighting, etc., can never be replaced, so I just hope that people remember that.
I also think that there is a shift in newborn photography away from the elaborate setups of hanging babies and heavily photoshopped images towards more simplistic, natural images. Which is great for me because that is what I do.
