Meet Esther Hansen of Fort Collins Weight Loss & Nutrition

Today we’d like to introduce you to Esther Hansen.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Esther. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I wanted to be a dietitian since I was seven years old after meeting my aunt’s gracious hospice dietitian. I was intrigued by the field, especially as it related to preventing chronic disease.

Fast forward 28 years…have been a dietitian for 12 years and have never looked back. Every day I leave work energized and am grateful for a fascinating, ever-evolving field of work.

My practice and interest have morphed from weight loss to Intuitive Eating (a non-diet approach to eating). Our culture has a disordered relationship with food and teaches us to suppress our body’s signals. When we face our psychological hang-ups with food, the act of eating becomes effortless. It is rewarding to see clients nourish and move their bodies – free from obsessive dieting.

Eight years ago my cousin and best friend died of appendix/colon cancer and I hated that I didn’t know how to help her. It has been my passion and pursuit to understand the microbiome and to help prevent and treat gastrointestinal discomfort and disease. My website, “TheRootCure.com” is in her memory and honor.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As proud as I am of being a dietitian, I had to choose early in my career to break from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the party line. Dietitians used to be known as (Food) Pyramid Pushers and some in our industry and been guilty of selling out to Coca Cola or other lucrative partnerships. Luckily, the field is changing and there are many who are passionate about evidence-based, environment-honoring nutrition policies.

Another struggle as a solopreneur is all the hats to wear. I am a science nerd, not an accountant or marketer, but I had to learn the basics to survive. Thank God for my brilliant brother and countless friends who have shared along the way.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
My business is Fort Collins Weight Loss & Nutrition. I practice with my dietitian partner Anne. Anne loves functional medicine and I love the psychological aspect of nutrition. We are both down-to-earth, meeting people where they are at, focusing on small, sustainable changes and creating a non-judgemental atmosphere for our friends and clients.

We offer in-office and virtual appointments (Telehealth). We are proud to be in-network with most insurance companies to make our services more accessible to our clients.

Anne and I have a number of pet projects – and App, PregnancyWeightTrackerPro.com, a DIY gut rehab program – TheRootCure.com and we love developing and teaching classes.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Ha! That’s a great question. Took me off guard.

I am lucky. And immensely grateful for parents and family that supported me through college, physicians that house my business and refer to me, clients who graciously trust me with their stories and health, colleagues who challenge me and help me grow, my husband who tolerates the incessant talk about the microbiome… I could go on and on.

Pricing:

  • Cost depends on your insurance (they set the contract rate) but we offer out-of-network, discount rates of $250 for 3, 1-hour appointments.
