Today we’d like to introduce you to Ewen and Heather North.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Red Hammer Rehab: Red Hammer Rehab is a physical therapy practice focused around giving patients top-notch treatment in Colorado was established in 2013 in Louisville Colorado. The practice flourished over the years and Dr. Michael Morrison PT, DPT was head-hunted to join the practice. He and I went to grad school together and I knew that he could give the same exceptional care to the current and future patients of the clinic. It is with the help of my husband Ewen during this entire process who has supported and helped grow the clinic, as the Director and Head Coach of Revolution Running.
Revolution Running: Revolution Running was started in 2011 after I worked for the BolderBOULDER 10K for seven years as their Training Club Director. The group was mainly based in Boulder and Denver to start with but we have since grown it to other towns along the Front Range of Colorado including Littleton, Longmont, Fort Collins and East Boulder County (Lafayette/Erie/Broomfield area).
Has it been a smooth road?
Red Hammer Rehab: The biggest struggle was managing the patient load at the clinic that began at years 2-3. I see our patients as family and when they get hurt, I, of course, was willing to stay late, come in early, or even sacrifice my lunch break. It’s what you do when you truly care. The addition of Dr. Morrison made such a big difference and has helped us grow steadily with more control which means I get to have a good work/life balance which is good for everyone and the business in the long run.
Revolution running:
Some of the greatest challenges have been growing, managing and sustaining the club across its multiple locations. We now have over 40 coaches, 6 Lead Coaches, and over 500 runners each year across three seasonal program. This all needs to be managed and operated smoothly while also making sure our runners are highly satisfied with the service they receive. Never easy and a constant juggling act especially in a world where peoples interests and goals and fitness trends are always changing.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Red Hammer Rehab: At Red Hammer Rehab, our entire philosophy is to get you back to what you love doing as quickly as possible. We work with active individuals of any and all ages and incorporate aggressive therapy techniques that help progress the patients in a few visits. We are an out of network practice which allows us to call the shots during each appointment and give the patient the best service while saving money in the long run.
I am very proud to be known for giving renowned service to our patients and for the name and reputation the clinic has within the active community and beyond.
Revolution Running: Revolution Running is a running training club for all abilities, who want to improve, meet others and have fun in a coached group training environment. We help train runners for distance events from 5K to the marathon. Training focus varies a little depending on the season. The focus is on the fun and social side of training while following a high-quality program that gets runners to their goals. It is that philosophy that has seen us grow to become Colorado’s foremost running training club. We have also fostered a really welcoming and supportive team atmosphere where everyone feels part of the whole. I think we are most proud of the community we have created and the amazing people we have been able to meet through this club.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
We do feel like the Boulder/Denver area is incredible for businesses like ours and is even perhaps somewhat unique in the country due to the sheer numbers of active and outdoorsy people here. However, this also makes it extremely competitive for both outpatient orthopedic Physical Therapy and for a running training club. The market in both these types of service are very saturated here so you have to focus on really doing an incredible job, doing it better than the competition and offering something the others don’t or cannot. You have to work very hard to make a success out of it and you also have to keep an eye on changing trends, markets and new/different ways of doing things to make sure you’re up with the latest.
I would recommend people starting out in this area but only if they’re prepared to work very hard at it.
