Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Hogate.
Kimberly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all began before I even knew it began… As a kid, I would edit our home VHS tapes from my childhood into compilations, walk the neighborhood and interview my neighbors on tape for my first “podcast,” and created a “newspaper” for my classroom (complete with gossip column) – yes, I got in trouble for that! Yet, when I was asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” my current job was not yet created. I was developing the skills needed for the future, yet the technology and demand wasn’t quite there yet.
So, I went to school for Journalism, seeing that as the closest fit to the stories and creative outlet that I sought. Unfortunately, upon my graduation in 2002, newspapers were shut down while smartphones, along with people’s insatiable desire for content, were just barely developing. I thought I had failed. That I had picked the wrong career. And, in part, I was right. I toiled and struggled for years working many jobs that were just that – jobs. None of them captured the creativity and analytic skills that now form what we do at Faceted Media.
Fast forward about seven years… I was working in a law firm as a legal clerk alongside a senior and junior attorney. Always craving more, I proposed a business development position to my employing senior attorney and began implementing sales and marketing (as I had done in each of my previous jobs), as well as creating the firm’s website. I generated over $20,000 in just six months. After some time, I and the junior attorney broke off and started our own high-end boutique law firm. After we built the company up to financial success, the firm was purchased by a different attorney, and I left to start Faceted Media, where I now help service-based businesses begin, thrive, and succeed with marketing, SEO, creative digital campaigns, lead generation, content creation, social media, photography, video and more.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe that nothing is fast, free, or easy, so bumps were to be expected. However, trusting my gut, and following the steady path of growth has led me to my success today. The biggest struggles involved working with the wrong types of clients. Now, we know that we work with service-based businesses with a socially conscious part of their practices. When we feel or see red flags, we suggest alternative routes for those clients. This allows us to maintain our mission and work with the clients we serve best.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
We are known for getting businesses to the front page of Google and generating leads. We are also well-known for creative content and amazing websites that work for our clients while bringing them business. Our style is casual, modern, intuitive and genuine. Our clients love working with us because we “get them” and because we are always learning – finding new ways to compete with Google’s algorithms and get them ahead. We think in a kaleidoscope of colors, nothing is ever black and white or by the book. We are innovative, personal, and extremely tech-savvy. We never skip a beat or a new “rule” from Google on SEO.
At Faceted Media, we are very focused on being socially conscious. For us, we want to spread the idea that any dream can become reality. We actively encourage the idea that you truly can do and be anything you want. As an “at-risk” youth myself, I was always misunderstood. Wildly creative and rambunctious, I was constantly getting in trouble at school. Yet, there were people along the way who were encouraging, and that’s what I sought to be when Faceted Media began to be solidly successful. Now, I am a regular public speaker at Denver Public Schools, speaking to middle and high school students in standard and alternative schools about following their dreams, no matter what. Faceted Media also has a paid internship program for kids who want to get digital and creative experience to help bridge the gap between graduation and a career doing what they love. It’s been life changing for me and for the kids that have joined the program.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Freedom. That’s literally it. When you can be free in your thoughts, in your time, and free to do what serves you, you have found success. The other part is helping others. When I can help my team be successful financially and experientially by teaching them new skills, that is the success to me. And, back to freedom, at Faceted Media, we create freedom for our clients. They are often leaving jobs that no longer appeal to them, or they want more time with their families, or they want to explore a new creative outlet. We help facilitate their dreams, making them a reality that monetarily supports itself as well.
