Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Gjurekovec.
Gabriela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When it comes to my passions in life, photography has been one of the passions that have stayed with me since I was five years old. I have my father to thank for giving me my first camera at such a young age. I even started my first career as an independent news photographer while all of my other friends were busy babysitting.
Over the years, photography has been a large part of my life – mainly as a hobby. It wasn’t until 2009 that I decided to take a leap of faith and start my photography company – Gabriela G Photography.
I am originally from Yugoslavia, now known as the Republic of Serbia. I moved to Canada in April 1999 at the age of 22 where I started my own business: Fleaurist ELLA in Montreal. In June 2005, I moved to Denver. As a newcomer to this side of the North American continent, I began building from the ground up learning about the culture, meeting new people, building a new business, establishing new connections, and friendships.
The life in Denver started off on a great note. I got married and contacted a realtor to purchase a new home. In the process of buying a new home, I overheard our realtor explain how difficult it was to find a photographer for her listings… my mind was going a hundred miles an hour, and I suddenly hear myself saying “I can do this for you.” She accepted my proposal and I run to the store and got the camera I couldn’t afford at the time, but that did not stop me. I was fully confident that I could do this. Even though I did not know anything about real estate photography, I looked back into my past and remembered my artistic and photography days and pushed myself and started photographing. It took a lot of practice and time and sleepless nights … but it is a skill that I mastered and still, love till this day.
Learning about opening a business, setting goals, getting to know your own products, and being able to deliver the best possible results is personally rewarding.
I am a high achiever and expect my product to be as great as I envisioned. I have a keen eye for details, and I put in a lot of sleepless nights to be where I am today. In my humble beginnings, I did not ask for a business loan. I was growing as I could. It was a slow process and still is. I am learning every day and I own my mistakes and my achievements. A year into my business I joined the North Metro Chamber of Commerce and started and continue building business relationships. I love what I do and I love my clients. I love the fact that I was able to create my own job and survived the learning curves by focusing on my goals and overcoming my obstacles.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being pregnant and starting a new business was a very big challenge. Being a new mom and still developing a home-based business seemed to be an easy task, but it was much more difficult than I had imagined. Not having the funds to start my own business and building clientele was also very challenging since I did not know anyone when I first moved to Colorado. In addition, English is my fifth language so that was another great obstacle. Denver is full of great photographers and finding my voice and signature in this market is still a great challenge, but it keeps me humble and always forces me to do better, to evolve, and to accomplish my life’s goal.
Please tell us about Gabriela G Photography.
I am much more than a real estate photographer, my passion lies in portraits and events as well. I love to play with light sources and capture the essence of my subjects. My motto is “simple elegance”. I always tell my clients: “Less is more.” The idea and passion behind it is to build long-lasting relationships and leave a legacy of long-lasting memories that are captured in digital form and in print.
My specialties cover many different genres of photography, but my top five are:
1. Real estate and Architectural Photography
2. Professional Business Headshots and Personal Branding
3. Family and High School Seniors Photography
4. Corporate Events and Special Event Photography
5. Boudoir Photography
I pride myself in my personable approach. With every project, I bring my true passion and dedication to deliver the best product for my clients. The most important ingredient when delivering the product is ensuring every client gets exactly what they asked for and more. There is no small or big job that doesn’t get my full attention from start to finish. I love to experiment with light so not one photo session is the same. I believe that each client is unique and needs to be treated that way. All my photoshoots are personalized – even in Real Estate! I believe that each home tells a different story, and it’s my job to capture and find out that story and bring it to life through my photography.
Fortunately, at this point of my ten-year venture, I am growing my team by teaming up with local contractors to deliver even more customized and specialized services to my clients and to meet their needs and to keep up with the new technological advances.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
To be honest, I do feel that I could have done things differently but as we all know we can’t go back in time. I wish that in the beginning, I had had more confidence in myself and my product. But overall I feel that I have learned a lot, and today I am a confident and experienced photographer due to those early learning challenges.
