Meet Gavin Anstey of Lumenati Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gavin Anstey.

Gavin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We started Lumenati in the basement of my partner, Scott McDonald, in 2013. He and I had known each other since we were kids, competing on opposite ski teams, and had always been great friends. We were even neighbors in college for a bit.

After school, I lived abroad for a year and then in Telluride for a few years, where I started a video production company focused on the outdoor industry. At the same time, Scott had graduated from design school in Denver and started working as a freelancer, building up a huge network. When I decided to move up from Telluride to give the video production company a real go, Scott suggested that we partner up and start a business together. And thus, Lumenati was born.

From the basement, we quickly found space at 24th and Larimer where we worked out of another agency’s office. It was an amazing location and allowed us to grow our business as well as our community. After about two and a half years, we moved to our current offices at 38th and Jackson, where we operate out of a 20,000 square foot warehouse. I like to call it the Rob Dyrdek Fantasy Factory for creativity. Besides operating our business Lumenati Productions, Cinebody, and Lumenati Tattoo (soon to open), we also have freelance graphic designers and a community of artists who work out of the space. It’s really an amazing place, with art & skating & dogs abound. The energy there is unlike any office you’ll ever experience.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building a business, let alone a brand, is never smooth. It’s one of the hardest things you’ll ever do, and it changes your life completely. But, it’s the best thing ever.

We’ve run into countless obstacles, challenges, and hurdles since we started the business. But every single one we were able to overcome; every single problem had a solution. I think that’s the biggest aspect of starting a business. It’s not only about the struggles because the struggles are aplenty, but about persevering through each and every one. You learn from the struggles. They make you not only better at business, but also a better person in general.

Lumenati Productions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Lumenati is a video production company and content agency in Denver, Colorado. We specialize in content creation, from big broadcast commercials to quick bits of content for social, and everything in between. Our focus is on making badass content and approaching production with a very unique mindset… whether that involves leveraging a lean crew, harnessing tools like Cinebody to tell really authentic stories at scale, or working on a set of 40+ people to produce a large commercial. In addition to video, we also offer content strategy, graphic design, motion graphics, animation, and a slew of other services.

What sets us apart, besides our approach, is our culture and our space. Our office is by far the coolest office you’ll ever experience in Denver. It has an energy unlike any creative space in the city, filled with art & creativity. That energy is embodied by our team, creating a vibe that is all about creation & making cool shit.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Communication is by far the most important aspect of my success or any success in business. Clearly communicating to your partners, employees, clients, anyone is super important. Being transparent, honest, and on the same page with everyone at all times is what makes a business thrive. Without good communication, you’re screwed.
