Meet Giulio D’Amore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giulio D’Amore.

Giulio, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey into photography started about two years ago when I picked up my wife’s Nikon D90. I’ve always been drawn to the outdoors and wanted to document my adventures. I spent countless hours on a short distance hike and that’s when I realized how gratifying taking photographs was for me. I soon began to read as many books as I could on nature photography, the do’s and don’ts, and the different techniques to master. After a few months, a
friend approached me with the idea of a collaboration, so we combined our passions to create pictures of puppets in various surroundings. We’ve been setting up shows in Denver ever since. Meanwhile, I practiced and tried to experience different types of photography, from shooting athletes to shooting beer festivals and breweries. I noticed that I was captivated by shooting portraits the most. For about one year now, I’ve been focusing on portrait photography, using natural lighting in different settings like the city and in nature. Most recently, I’ve had the opportunity to use a space for studio portraits, where I have been experimenting with lighting, backdrops, and props and I found my creative freedom in that. I want my portraits to capture people’s raw beauty and personality. I want them to feel seen, for who they are, unapologetically themselves.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think some might say that, like with any creative career, it’s hard to find your space, especially at the beginning of your journey. I find that it comes easy for me to put myself out there in terms of being propositive and not fearing rejection, I am quite tenacious.

When working on my portrait portfolio, most of the models were friends, acquaintances and even strangers I met at my local coffee shop. I am constantly inspired by people in their honest moments and I am now comfortable with asking them to take their picture.

I guess the only challenge is time, I still have much to learn but I am lucky to be surrounded by people that offer me their insight, knowledge and positive feedback. I thank my dad for the inspiration, my wife for the support and motivation, and Leon Gallery for the creative space.

Please tell us about Giulio D’Amore Photography.
I own a portrait photography business, not specific to a certain style of photography. Portraits can either be done outdoors or in a studio.

I want my studio portraits to be different from any other photographer, to set myself apart my backdrops are hand made and some of the props that I use as well. I am not interested in selling digital images, I sell prints only and customers receive a digital file with the purchased printed photo. I also provide beautiful hand made hardwood frames.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
So many but the ones I made growing up on a farm in Brazil have to be the best and closest to my heart. My brother and I would ride horses, climb trees, play by the waterfall, and camp with my dad in the pasture fields. We would eat berries right off the tree and play with friends at the tree house surrounded by banana trees…
