Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Keeler.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Grace’s Space came into existence almost three years ago. I started it as a way to do something I love and make some money while still being able to stay home with my boys. When I first started Grace’s Space I was clueless where to begin. I knew I loved making wreaths and refinishing old furniture. I felt like I was giving the furniture a second chance at life. I started with selling these items as well as unique vintage and antique pieces. I quickly learned to have any chance at success. I needed to change what I was selling. As much as I loved what I was doing, it wasn’t making me enough money to make it worthwhile. I had to make a change and sell what people wanted to buy, not what I wanted them to. I eventually started selling unique home decor which I like to call rustic Colorado home decor. I carry a variety of furniture, lamps, signs, artwork, most of which revolves around this rustic Colorado theme which includes cabin/ski/equestrian decor. I love to find unique pieces that make my customers excited to put them in their homes. When I hear how much they love the items, it brings me back to why I do what I love!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My biggest struggle was identifying what products my customers wanted to buy as it isn’t easy to predict. For me finding a successful product mix was an evolution and involved several failures before hitting on some more popular items. Even to this day, I’m always on the hunt for new products that my customers can’t live without, so the search is never-ending. My shop is in The Emporium in Castle Rock, and I am fortunate enough to have the support and encouragement from many other small business owners there which has helped along the way.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Grace’s Space – what should we know?
Grace’s Space specializes in unique home decor. I like to say I sell all things Colorado – whether that is mountain-themed, skiing or equestrian. One of my more popular products are town signs that I can customize with various town names along with either elevation or GPS coordinates. The metal signs are made in the USA by a small family business. Once received, I then hand-make wood frames to mount them on which really gives it a rustic feel. In addition to these signs, I have many other popular items that are great for decorating your home or as gifts. I love finding that special piece that makes the customer excited to bring it home and want to return to see what is new.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband has been my biggest cheerleader. He has always encouraged me to try and do my best and take some risks because without risk there is no reward. At times it can be hard to make decisions on what products to buy and how much to order. He has always been supportive and willing to go out on the limb with me to see if we can make the business successful.
