Meet Greyson Plate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greyson Plate.

Greyson, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had “an eye for photography,” but it wasn’t always my passion or a career. I’ve been an athlete for as long as I can remember. I’ve been a jiu jitsu player, competitor, and instructor for the last decade or so, and am currently a black belt instructor in the Denver area.

My true passion for photography began a few years back, starting with some creative iPhone shots with some filters thrown on, followed by buying a camera that sat in the closet for quite a while. I’d had a couple of close friends whose photography I looked up to, and wanted my photos to look like theirs, but never seemed to be able to take the leap, or fully devote myself. It wasn’t until meeting my (now) wife that I truly felt the motivation to start learning and practicing – I wanted to impress her truth be told. So, just over three years ago, I dove in. Coincidentally, right around the time, I began improving my photography skillset, my wife and I had planned our first trip together and my first time ever visiting Colorado. Prepping for the trip, I had some opportunities to apply to photograph a few concerts we’d planned on attending, and remembered being angry at myself at the time for not really having much of a portfolio at all, and knew I wouldn’t be recognized. Well, I wasn’t, and that fueled my fire.

We enjoyed our trip and when we returned home, I dove in. Meeting up with and bugging my photography friends constantly, studying YouTube and taking courses, and reaching out to as many people, brands, businesses, musicians and I possibly could looking for opportunities to shoot, on top of just wandering around my neck of the woods looking for cool things to photograph.

Fast forward to now, Photography (and now videography) has taken me to so many amazing places, has introduced me to so many amazing people (some of whom are now some of my best friends) and has opened doors for me I’d never have imagined. The best part, I’m nowhere near where I want to be and am still a baby in this industry for all intents and purposes. A bonus, my wife is always right there shooting by my side and we get to enjoy this journey together.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not necessarily. I’ve been shot down, left hanging and wondering, ignored, and looked over more times than I can count. Despite an increasing amount of content that I’ve created and am proud of, I still have a long way to go and still have so many new things to learn.

The beauty of this art is you can learn as you go, and just like any other skill or craft, there will always be somebody out there who is leaps and bounds better than you’ve ever dreamed you’d be. It’s difficult at times to stay motivated; difficult to find creativity some days, and difficult not to get discouraged by not getting that shot you wanted, or that job somebody inquired about that would’ve been game-changing. But, such is life.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I started out doing a lot of landscape and outdoor work, a lot of which I still sell prints of on my online gallery. That niche, though, can be difficult to make an income through. I’ve shifted as of late to doing a lot of personal branding work and product photography for individuals, entrepreneurs, bands and musicians, and businesses who need content to promote either themselves or their services/products. I’ve done a ton of live music photography as well, which has been more fun than I can explain.

I pride myself on the relationships I build with people, and the memories we make when working together. As I said before, some of the clients I’ve had or people I’ve shot for have become some very good friends of mine. I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to relate to people, and hopefully my ability to capture raw and genuine emotion candidly. My recent “motto,” if you want to call it that, has been “create moments, tell stories,” which has been the best way I’ve found yet to describe what I do and why I do it.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love everything about our city. The culture, the incredibly welcoming and respectful people, the insanely beautiful landscape (obviously), and the live music!!!
