Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Nicole Gifford.
Heather, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Eight years ago, I had an idea to write a story about my friend Crystal, who, in time, became my sister. She was stubborn, sassy, unafraid to be direct, and forever loyal. She always tried to share the faith she believed in. I reached out to my friend Lora, who also became a sister to me, for us both to relive moments. For about three months, we were gathering ideas and looking to start organizing. But, like most things, life happened and we weren’t able to get past the phase of brainstorming.
Fast forward four years, my husband Chad and I bought a house in Cheyenne, WY. We’ve both wanted to live in the vicinity of the mountains for quite some time. In the back of my mind, I’ve often thought of bringing up the idea of a book once more, but again, life can get in the way.
Fast forward another two years. The house my husband and I bought in Wyoming is destroyed by a tornado. For a year, we lived in a hotel while trying to work with a contractor to re-build the house. We ran into a few issues for the rebuild. I’ve always had the tugging to continue with the book but didn’t really have the desire. I thought that indulging in something I wanted meant that I might lose sight of getting our house back.
Fast forward a year. My neighbor invited Chad and I to church with their family. Honestly, I was a bit hesitant at first. Little did I know going would spark a prayer and that prayer would help me to realize that I needed to finish the book. While my husband I were looking for a place to live after being in the hotel, I realized it was time to continue with the book. Technology allowed me to work with Lora and move along with putting our ideas into a shareable document.
Fast forward to the current day. My husband and I are going through some things and working on getting our house re-built. At the moment we are living in our travel camper until the house is done, unfortunately, we don’t know when that will be just yet. The book is now undergoing a few re-writes and will soon be handed to an editor. But with prayer, resilience, and support from Chad as well as Lora, the book is now scheduled to be published in late 2021.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Being a writer is something to not take lightly. More importantly, being a writer in the right type of environment is not something to take lightly, either. I realize that it probably would have been easier to work on the book before the tornado took the house, but it just wasn’t meant to work out that way. I’m proud to be working on something that will hopefully touch the lives of a lot of people. I understand a lot of writers pour their hearts and soul out a lot. For me, living, working and writing in a 36-foot camper trailer is a bit of baring my soul.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
A lot of writers are going with the self-publishing route, which is what I plan to do. I think it is awesome to see writers take publishing into their own hands.
