Meet Heather Reed, Realtor with RE/Max Professionals in Centennial

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Reed.

Heather, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
What started out as a disaster, became the soil for a dream. My husband and I were living just outside Detroit at the time, and we had lost out on buying what I thought would be our dream house. Instead, we ended up with a dirty, old, trashed foreclosure. We had to take out walls, wire new electrical and plumbing, install completely new bathrooms and kitchen, refinish floors, new landscaping…and the list went on and on. We put months of blood, sweat and tears into this little ranch. But when it was all done, it was beautiful. We sold it for more than double what we initially paid. I realized I had a talent, and thoroughly enjoyed the world of real estate. And so, a dream was born.

I wanted to be on the front lines of what was happening in the real estate market. Not just as an investor, but as someone who could help others realize their dreams, grow their portfolio, and maybe even become financially independent one day.

I am analytically minded, a clever strategist, and always up for a challenge. I have purchased investment properties for our family and run our own rental property business. Being personally vested in the market, I think creatively and critically for the other investors I now work with. And the first time home buyer, or couple thinking about downsizing? I enjoy the teaching aspect and personal nature of my role. I have a unique opportunity to walk with people through some of their most exciting or challenging day. I work with integrity for their best interests, to fulfill their hopes and dreams.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Before even beginning as a realtor, my mentor advised, “Only join this industry if you are okay with waking up every day unemployed.” Little did I know how true…and terrifying that was! I would say the average person on the street probably thinks real estate agents just get all their clients through their company – their company gives them leads, pays their salary, and they make easy money. It couldn’t be further for the truth!

Agents are responsible to find each and every client they work with. No one is “giving” me business. My first dollar is transferred to my account after a sale is completed for a client – whether it takes two months and 50 hours, or two years and 100s of hours, or never amounts to anything at all.

So, just like most agents beginning in the business I fell for the trap that I needed to pay $1000s every month for “leads.” I spun my wheels in the mud for months…and four months into the business hadn’t closed a single deal. Was I really cut out for this? Had I sunk $1000s of my family’s personal savings into a business that was about to fail?

Realtor with RE/Max Professionals – What should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in working with investors and first time home buyers. I am one of the “go-to” people for anyone thinking about opening their own Airbnb business, as I am successfully running one of my own, and have helped multiple others do the same. And with my experience in buying fix and flip properties, I enjoy helping investors and “DIYers” envision what they can do with a property. With first time homebuyers or a family looking for their next house, I love teaching others about the process, taking time to answer all their questions and concerns. And no matter their timeline, it is just fine with me. Whether we need to get out and find a place quickly, or take a year to find the perfect fit, I am here to serve.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The fall of 2018 I was named #1 Listing Agent out of all the Re/Max Professional agents out of the DTC and Southlands offices. That fall was a slowing down in the Denver market, and I was one of the newer agents who worked there. My bosses told me “don’t expect that to happen again for a long time”. I thought, “well, maybe that was just a fluke.” Then in March 2019, I was named #1 Closing Agent and in June 2019 I was named #3 Listing Agent. Awards aren’t everything, but it was proof in writing that my hard work and determination was paying off.
