Today we’d like to introduce you to Humberto Daniel Bastardo Darthenay.
Humberto, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today
I started in the world of events at the age of 17, when I was an employee of a company that organized children’s events, this was a part-time job since at the same time I was attending college pursuing a degree in Systems Engineering. After several years of working for that company I realized that I was stuck in a place with no opportunities to develop my full potential, ideas and dreams, so I decided to take a chance and worked on getting independent and create my own brand and company. The complexity, amount of details and logistical developments that merit this work, is an art. I really wanted something different and decided to market my brand to a higher target of social events such as a wedding, christening, communions, corporate and recreational events such as concerts, plays, shows, stand-up comedy. I invested in my own business so that my desire was to grow as much as companies that were my inspiration in the main cities of Venezuela.
I prepared myself and I acquired all the necessary knowledge to feel 100% capable although I always felt empirical because in my mind the ideas of what a wedding should be like, were clear and always the more creative you are the more beautiful it will be. To plan a wedding, you must know that the first thing is to work with the emotions of the bride and groom, their relatives and guests, and that is only achieved after meeting them, knowing their tastes and their beliefs. I got certified in Venezuela as Wedding and Event Planner and I am a current member of the Venezuelan Wedding Federation (FEVEB).
Has it been a smooth road?
I started organizing weddings for friends and family where my monetary gain was almost nothing, but I was really earning a lot because I was creating my social networks, I was making myself known to the public in my hometown and being only 20 years old I had in my hands a great opportunity and responsibility that I could always handle it and carry it out, of course all work has its levels of difficulty. After showing a high level of professionalism, I managed to position myself as the main company in wedding organizing in my hometown. For those who do not know, Venezuela is a country that in the last 22 years has presented a high level of backwardness, compared to other countries such as United States, Europe and Asia, I was always inspired by large companies, I saw what they did, how they did it, I investigated the subject, acquired new knowledge and trends with the intention of offering something 100% innovative, and today I can say that It was the key to success in my company and my person as a wedding and event planner.
Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
Weddings were the main function of my company. And then, I decided to engage and carry out other types of events in the entertainment arena, promoting concerts in venues throughout the city , theaters, stand-up shows, things that are seen more regularly in main cities of the country.
Creating my own artist booking, I could offer my clients artists of national or international stature to perform at their events, of course this did not happen with everyone, since all wedding budgets are different, but taking advantage of that comment I wanted to tell you that I could work, with groups such as Chino and Nacho, Guaco, The Melodics, La Dimension Latina, Victor Munoz, Aran one, Sixto Rein, All these previous artists of great renown in Venezuela and the world, including Fares Karam a famous artist from Libya.
Create and organize Weddings from 50 up to 1000 people, Weddings with five tables and others up to 100, requires a great amount of logistics organization and execution. Every single detail is very important and requires a lot of attention, starting with the bride and groom, the Families, guests, all of the working team and suppliers, who all are part of a successful event.
I can organize any type of Event but my Specialty is weddings. The ceremonial part really inspires me, all the rules of protocol that make it a really beautiful moment. In my country I made myself known mainly for the creativity to carry out events, I was always reinventing myself by offering or creating new things so that it was incredible.
What makes me most proud of my company is the level that I was able to position it in, in a country that is completely in crisis, such as the situation in Venezuela today.
I had the opportunity to be invited to participate in two high-level exhibitions where there were excellent and successful wedding providers with many years of experience in 2016 at Expo Boda Panama that took place in March of that year at the Hotel Riu Panama, and in In 2018, I was invited to participate in Expo Boda Miami, which took place in October of that year in Sunny Isles-Miami Florida. In January 2020, I attended the Rocky Mountain bridal Show at the Denver Convention Center, where I was able to meet many of the local suppliers. In the next one, I intend to participate as an Exhibitor.
Although I have been successful as a Wedding and event planner in my country, Venezuela, by overcoming the challenges that come with planning each event and putting so much effort into organizing each one, this success is sometimes bittersweet.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Denver, we have an international airport and have four professional sports teams, hockey, basketball, football, baseball, and there is a lot to do and people are very unpretentious but cool and generally well educated. The weather it is pretty amazing, semi-arid, the snow in the winter makes the best conditions for winter sports/activities, dry cold, a lot of sunny days in the middle of winter and the mountain towns. No one knows Colorado without knowing about all the mountain towns, Vail, Aspen, Winter Park, Breckenridge, Frisco, Silverthorne, Dillon and many others hidden gems. Summers are not too hot. I could go on and on about what I like about Denver/Colorado and that is why I believe it’s a perfect location for me to develop my business. What I dislike and it’s probably the only thing, it’s that for my wedding planning business, the activity has a break during the winter season, even though it is an awesome time in the Rockies.
