Today we’d like to introduce you to Ian Dexter.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ian. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always desired to communicate through touch what cannot be said through words. This statement started me on my journey to becoming an LMT, Licensed Massage Therapist.
Once starting in massage school I believed I wanted to become a spa massage therapist; however, during my studies, I came across a form of massage that helped me reduce my own chronic pain. You see I have daily chronic migraine, which basically means I always have a headache, and discovering something that helped me severely reduce my own pain sparked a desire and passion to give this gift back to anyone and everyone.
This leads me up to today. The owner of my own practice dedicated to reducing chronic pain as well as increasing range of motion; all to give the gift of solace to anyone I can.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to today has not been easy, and as sad as it is to say many of my roadblocks have been self-inflicted. As a teenager growing up with a chronic illness I turned to one surefire way of becoming pain-free, drugs. This led me down a dark path of becoming a borderline cocaine and meth addict. Now I make the distinction of borderline because unlike many I did not sell my life away and caught myself just before fully plunging into the depths of addiction, and I shouldn’t say I caught myself; my mother caught me. She discovered what I had been doing and the pain it caused her woke me up enough to pick myself up by my bootstraps and clean my act up!
Now the road I thought would get easier after breaking my own addiction cycle; but it became more difficult, because not only did I have to manage the battle against drugs, I also had to relearn how to manage my own chronic condition as well. So I threw myself into my work for a while until I had set up a health and wellness team that has kept me up and functioning better than I ever used to.
So although I have had some struggles mine have been less than many, so I continue to work towards becoming a member of that health team for anyone and everyone!
Now the one roadblock I have had that was not self-inflicted is my identity. As a Homosexual, Genderfluid Person, I had to become very sure in myself at an early age; because, although I never face overt bigotry or hatred I needed to become the proud member of the community that I am today.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about your work?
My business, Searching for Solace Therapeutic Massage, LLC., is a massage therapy practice specializing in reducing chronic pain, as well as increasing range of motion in order to give people the solace of finally feeling good!
I am known for my Neuromuscular, and Sports Therapy modalities that allow me to help re-educated muscles to function more in the ways they are supposed to.
I am most proud of a very simple fact. I am a business owner at 21 and have the rest of my career to continue educating myself to become the best LMT I possibly can!
I feel I have a couple things that set me apart the most notable being, my background struggles, as well as having a desire to provide complete care to any I can. My background makes me unique because it means I can look at a person and fully empathize with their struggle of daily pain, because I’ve been there, and still am there. So I can relate in ways that help me to deepen my bond with my clients. I also am fully committed to the care of my clients in many ways; I have a hot tub, steam room, and other amenities my clients may use before or after their massage in order to de-stress, I have a referral network of wonderful providers in order to supplement my clients care in ways I can’t, and lastly I personal have an ever-growing range of modalities and expansion services in order to personalize the care I give to each client!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Every day brings a new “proudest moment” because every time I reduce a client’s pain or help them move how they used to they get this light in their eyes, one of pure joy that shines because they know they are getting better.
I can not pin an exact moment but the greatest achievement would be helping one of my clients recover near full range of motion in the shoulder after seven years of impeded function!
