Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Knight.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Stephen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
There was a point in time where I was sitting at an internship in a corporate setting, where I realized that this wasn’t for me. I actually had to walk outside of the office and cried a little. From there, I began plotting a way to try something different. To be able to create for others while also telling my own story. At first, I had tried YouTube, which failed miserably. From there, I decided to merge my love of cinematics with my love for festivals and become a festival videographer. Although I did love doing it, it wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do as well. All of those failures led me to where I am today. I could go on for hours on this, but there were plenty of nights where I didn’t get sleep. Watching the sunrise come up while looking at another tutorial, leaving work/school on a Friday to fly to a festival, getting no sleep and turning around work in 12-24 hours to fly back and go back in the office on Monday. There were so many nights where I questioned where I was. But those nights have made me confident that this was the right decision. Those nights have built me up to where I am today.
Has it been a smooth road?
Although my road was easier than the average road, I wouldn’t say it was smooth. Again, changing my lifestyle, leaving a relationship, and turning my back on everything I’ve learned and studied for wasn’t a walk in the park. To be able to sacrifice comfort and sleep/health in order to learn and shoot was taxing on me physically and mentally. With that being said, I’ve had mentors come into my life that’s made this path easier, and faster, along with life looking favorably on me and putting things into place. So the road was smoother than average, but still not smooth.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Itsaknightslife is a brand that aims to tell stories through images and visuals, no matter what the final outcome/client is. With the world turning to online marketing, and everyone having a camera, the challenge was now differentiating yourself from the next person. Whether it’s music festivals, brand work, or corporate work, there’s a piece of me that aims to tell a story that can leave someone thinking. As an artist, it’s my job to leave the audience with a feeling, which I believe is sometimes missed with the new age of content being pumped out. Anyone can put images next to each other and may have the technicalities of a good shot down.
But can they inspire someone to leave their bed that they’ve been stuck in while a pandemic is going on, to explore a whole new area they didn’t know existed and inspire them to do more while promoting clothes? That’s where I believe my strength lies. I’m proud that I cause people to feel, and I cause people to think because that’s where change comes from. And ultimately, if I leave the world a little different than I found it, I did what I was supposed to do. I want people to have a sense that even when the world says that our time is up: “We’re just getting started.” There’s more to do.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Denver has inspiration all around it. Anyone can do what I’m doing, especially here. All they have to do is pick a direction and there’s a story to tell. The question is, what is their story? Take a drive into the mountains and come back and tell me that there wasn’t something magnificent for you to share. I don’t think that’s possible.
