Today we’d like to introduce you to James Brown.
James, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Creating things has been a common theme throughout my life. It has taken me through a long career as a graphic designer helping people develop their brand, advertising and marketing materials. Along the way, I branched off into starting two magazines focused on kiteboarding, which is one of the many sports I do that involve the need for wearing helmets. I also had a business making jacks for getting snowmobiles unstuck.
I was passionate about those ventures but they weren’t getting me close enough to the life I really wanted to create for myself or the possibility for financial freedom. All along I had been planning on buying rental properties to supplement and eventually replace my income. But I dragged my feet and let the 2008 recession be an excuse for not taking action. Luckily I woke up and committed to learning everything I could about real estate over a period of years.
I continually read books, blogs, listen to podcasts, joined real estate investing associations, take classes, go to networking events, joined a couple mastermind groups and have hired two high-level mentors along with my business partner Toby Hanson whom I met at a networking event. We both have similar stories and goals and decided to team up and form a creative real estate business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been smooth or easy. I found that there are so many ways to make money in real estate that I became confused about which way to go. But I found my niche and am going full steam. I learned that a lot of people, including myself, let fear hold them back. And those around us can pass their fear and doubts on to us. Surrounding ourselves with driven, smart people with similar goals is absolutely critical. Mindset is 80 percent of this business if not more.
Staying committed to my goals and realizing that taking action every day is essential. Getting out of my comfort zones has been absolutely necessary. I’ve had to force myself to learn the numbers behind deals. Going to events, speaking to groups of people, cold calling sellers and learning effective sales techniques has been a stretch too. I’ve grown so much through these challenges and still have a long way to go!
Real Home Solutions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We use creative real estate investing strategies that not many people know about or are willing to learn and implement. We help people become homeowners that didn’t think they could buy a home.
We help others invest in real estate that don’t have the time, knowledge or passion that we do but want to make good money to eventually get out of the rat race. We also work with and help lenders, real estate agents, credit specialists and financial advisors. Everyone wins!
I got into this out of necessity and thought it would be a grind because it is nothing like my other creative work. But I found that what we are doing is creative and challenging in different ways, so it is fulfilling. Plus, it is really rewarding helping all these people in life-changing ways. We are especially proud of that!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
This is a relationship business and a team sport! I couldn’t do it without the support of my family, friends, mastermind group members, strategic partners, amazing mentors and my kick-ass business partner. The list of names would be very long. You know who you are and I thank you all!
