Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmyne Kettwick.
Jasmyne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have walked in many different shoes in my lifetime! I ran a bed and breakfast, have worked in bars and restaurants, sang onstage in musicals, bagged groceries and worked on a riverboat casino- just to name a few of my adventures. Throughout it all, I genuinely enjoyed getting to know people. Where they came from, what created drive in them, and how they find resilience through obstacles and unknowns.
I have never been a huge fan of small talk I became a Marital and Family Therapist, and have Play Therapy and Sandplay credentials as well. As a therapist, I started to recognize that I could connect with clients and their families just by being engaged with them and remaining curious about who they were, are, and want to be.
Relate Family Therapy and Counseling was born out of the idea that all members of a family need help through a trauma. Challenging family events don’t just affect one member of the family. I wanted people to find one space, that is safe and supportive to open up, be vulnerable, and heal with professionals.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building Relate from just myself to a team has meant many interviews one on ones with therapists to create an expert team of clinicians. I take huge pride in the work of the team with the clients that trust Relate for therapy. Finding the time, energy, and money to invest in therapy is a big commitment. I want to make sure the name I provide people for their healing is one that I trust. All of our therapists are well trained and passionate about the area that they specialize in, which shows in their work.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Young kids, tweens, teens, adults, couples and families are all clients in the nine office suites at Relate Family Therapy and Counseling in South Metro Denver. Relate was started out of the idea that therapy should not add additional stress to life. People attend therapy when they are at their most stressed, vulnerable, and unsure of what to do next. Trusting another person enough to admit that change is needed is hard. I designed the space and created an expert team around what all members of a family would need to feel comfortable, safe and supported.
I found clients were having great results in their ability to change and shift with therapy and increased family support. All of the therapists are trained in high trauma, in addition to their individual specialties. Anxiety, depression, anger management, divorce, behavioral issues, grief and loss, maternal health, and child attachment are some of the concerns that Relate can help work through. In addition to the therapists,’ the rooms at Relate are designed for the client. Playrooms for younger and older children, family spaces, and adult/couple spaces all have great views and a comfortable feel, designed for the client to feel comfortable and inviting.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I love hearing a family reconnect and laugh again. Sometimes the stress of the dynamics that are playing out in the family has become so tense and overwhelming that the seriousness of the situation and the possible negative outcomes weigh heavily on everyone in the room. As we have sessions, there typically becomes a point where some of the burdens lift and the family can begin to joke with one another again. That is such a powerful sign of hope and healing in the process.
