Meet Jason Ganahl of GQue Barbeque

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Ganahl.

Jason, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started out as a competition BBQ judge about ten years ago then started competing in Professional BBQ contests. We won a LOT of contests in 2013 and 2014 and got to know the top comp BBQ cooks in the country many of them had bbq restaurants and wondered if a competition BBQ place would do well in Denver area. I opened GQue in Westminster in November of 2015 the Lonetree In December of 2018 and most recently, this past fall, we opened up a spot inside Empower Field at Mile High.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Heck no! haha I could write for hours on the struggles. Restaurants are notoriously known as being a tough business. I have so much respect for my fellow restaurant folks. Right now, we are dealing with a Mandate to close our inside as a result of COVID 19. Trying to keep the restaurant afloat while our landlords and other vendors expect payment, as we try to ramp back up to pre-COVID levels, will be a struggle for the next year or two.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the GQue Barbeque story. Tell us more about the business.
We smoke our meats fresh each day. We cook the amount we think we will need and when we sell out, we are done for the day. I think having the same day made BBQ tastes much better than re-heated bbq. Our background is BBQ competitions and we are proud of our success in those. We are known as being Colorado’s only Championship BBQ restaurant winning Grand Championships in Professionally sanctioned BBQ contests.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Timing is so important – I’m afraid if I was trying to get a place going know, it would be so much more expensive and I would have been priced out then starting five years ago when it was still relatively reasonable to rent out a spot.
