Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason R. Houston.
Jason, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Still, Cellars is a true artisanal distillery and community arthouse, conceived and constructed in Longmont, Colorado over several years by its two owner-operators, Jason R. Houston and Sadye Rose W. Still, Cellars uses only certified organic ingredients, conducts business responsibly and kindly, and works earnestly to foster and support art and build community. The arthouse and spirits reflect the owners’ passion for creativity, quality, and innovation.
The duo lovingly hand-craft every product from scratch using traditional methods and uncompromising standards. The arthouse is the distillery’s tasting room as well as a comfortable venue for artists of all media to exhibit and perform. Still, Cellars is open Wednesday and Friday evenings for tastings, concoctions, and live music with no cover or reservations required. Other evenings the arthouse is host to a plethora of exhibition, performance, and educational events such as theatre, storytelling, concerts, poetry, fine arts, forums, films… all manner of creative expression and communal conclaves. Still, Cellars are also available for private events, gatherings, and tours.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like a full and flowing river, the journey has been a wild ride. In our efforts to maintain the highest standards in everything we do, we have built our entire business literally by hand. While that sometimes saves a few bucks, mostly it demands tremendous time and energy, and is not always immediately recognized or supported by established bureaucracies. As artists and artisans, we have often found ourselves not fitting into the mold, and thus needing to work harder and/or get more creative to move forward.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
The degree to which everything we do and offer is entirely personal and uncompromised. We have refused to make decisions based on the “bottom line”, and thus maintained a level of integrity truly rare in the world of business. This includes our extensive support as a venue for artists and performers.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is an audience being moved by art and performance. Success is an artist utilizing a safe space to share their work, and an audience receiving. Success is simplicity, purity, community. Our motto is, “artful organic alchemy.” When that is created and shared, that’s a success.
