Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Merz.
Jenn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started taking private art lessons when I was 12. Art was the only thing that made sense to me, likely due to chaotic home life. I continued my art lessons throughout adolescence, striving to take every art class I could find. Thanks to grit, a solid foundational education from my high school and, an affinity for the craft I was able to pass standards for Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia.
In college, I explored processes which led me to my niche as a painter, printmaker and sculptor and, discovered my appreciation for shape, color and emphasis on the female figure. Like so many of us, life throws adversity which can be a hindrance to our passions. Regardless, I continue to work and show at galleries in Denver; you can also find one of my etching prints at the free library in Philadelphia’s permanent collection.
Has it been a smooth road?
While my father and Stepmother were very supportive of my art endeavors, art school was on me. The will to work two jobs to support myself while in college conditioned me for the standard obstacles in the pursuit of my craft. When I turned 30 the horrors of my childhood began to haunt me affecting many areas of my life, again; creating art helped me survive.
Despite the effects of these memories (triggers) impacted my life, I continued; working two jobs, taking printmaking workshops, participating in local art events, etc. As hard as that time was for me, it leads my art to have purpose! I decide to use the emotions I was experiencing in my work to pull out those monsters for the world to see, my hope is that my work will inspire others.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
