Meet Jennifer Holmes of K9 Fitness Works in North Fort Collins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Holmes.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Since 2007 infection with the mosquito-borne West Nile Virus, I have been learning to build my own strength, repair my nervous system, and work on balance. My dog at the time, Tina, knew I was going to replase during times of stress in the body and gave me signals I learned to help me heal quicker. This experience has taught me a health intuition to connect with dogs that are experiencing the same challenges due to injury, age, or disease. We walk through the journey together. I have learned exercise, stretching, and nutrition builds a foundation for a healthy dog through my work since 2012 as a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner helping dogs recover from knee, spine, and nerve injuries.

My business journey started with a friend and client that was part of the Larimer County Search And Rescue dog team. She asked me to put a fitness program together for them and told me I was really good at what I did, and should create a business. Now it is my passion to help you understand what your dog is telling you, so there is a stronger bond to prevent injury through basic canine fitness programs.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a challenging road with many detours and cliffs. My biggest struggle was transitioning from a Certified Veterinary Technician to a dog trainer. There were so many mental struggles from two different professions, yet the same goal in mind. One profession is run by governing boards and the other is run by a knowledge of business. The next struggle was how to run a business. We are not taught, through education, how to have a healthy mindset for money or business. My parents taught me how to value and budget money as I grew up. A healthy money and business mindset is something I had to learn from mentors that have been on the road before me, and I am still learning every day.

Please tell us about K9 Fitness Works.
I specialize in creating stronger dogs and stronger bonds with you through canine physical fitness. I am known as the dog whisper by my clients. Their dogs love me and I love them. My passion is to help dog owners or pet parents learn the foundation of proper fitness that will prevent injury. Many of my clients see their dogs do amazing physical strengths, like climb a woodpile or a log A-frame. The owner is not scared they are going to get injured because they can see their dog has good body awareness as they climb off the pile or log. I am very good at what I do and passionate about helping owners listen to what their dogs are telling them. My background in animal health also allows me to find the right path for my clients and sometimes that is seeing a veterinarian before they see me.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Success is built on kindness, direct, no-nonsense communication, and a bright light for the world of animal health. If I fall, I get back up and figure away over the mountain alongside my dog friends.
