Meet Jennifer Zick of J. Zick Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Zick.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story starts in Omaha, Nebraska. I grew up in Omaha, playing every sport under the sun. My parents put us in sports from as early as I can remember. I did everything. I did gymnastics, swimming, soccer, track, basketball, volleyball, and the list goes on. Ultimately gymnastic and soccer quickly became my number 1’s. Growing up as a competitive athlete, being active has always been in my blood, and I always knew that I wanted to work in a field that allowed me to still be around sports and be active.

Fast forward a few years and I went to college on a soccer scholarship. My first two years of college I attended Iowa Western Community College. I jumped around different majors within the sports medicine field and landed on studying general sports medicine. After my two years at Iowa Western, I transferred to Wayne State College to go to school and play soccer another two years. At Wayne State, I found what I really wanted to do. I always knew that I wanted to help people live happier, healthier lives and the Exercise Science program there, guided me in the right direction. At Wayne State, I earned my bachelors degree in Exercise Science and it could not have fit me better!

After college, I moved out to the Denver area for an internship at Next Level Sports Performance in Golden and worked there all summer learning so much. I am eternally grateful for the experience I had during my internship. With what I learned during that time, I really found my niche within my personal training today.

Now I am working as a personal trainer in Lakewood Colorado at Modevo Fitness. I train all different types of people with many different goals in mind, from body transformations to sports performance.

Along with staying busy training, I also stay busy coaching gymnastics and working with Colorado local supplement company, Body Rival.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My journey was far from smooth. Let’s be real, how many people graduate college and know exactly what they want to do and how they are going to get there? Not many, and I was one of those who didn’t. After graduating from college, the only thing I knew that I was doing was that I was moving to Colorado for an internship. After that, I had no idea.

After finishing my internship, I caught saying to myself, ” well what now?” I bounced back and forth between Nebraska and Colorado, interviewing at countless gyms and facilities trying to figure out what the heck I wanted to be when I grew up. I was trying to find where I was going to live and what I was going to do for work. Keep in mind during all of this, I was coming off of a four month unpaid internship. I got to a point where I was down to the last $20 in my bank account.

At this point, I just needed a paycheck, so I chased one. Someone had offered me a job selling insurance, and I needed money so I took it. I made little to no money doing it, and it was because I was not in it at all. That job didn’t give me any motivation or desire to work, and therefore, I was not successful in it. So I knew something had to change. At this point, I knew that I wanted to stay in Colorado, so I hopped on indeed and applied for countless jobs, interviewing at facilities until I found something that felt right.
The moment I finished my interview at Modevo Fitness, I knew this was it. I loved every single aspect of what they had to offer. Working at this studio has been one of the most enjoyable experiences, and now I have been here just about a year and a half.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I work as a personal trainer. I do in person training at Modevo Fitness, and I do online training through J. Zick Fitness. I specialize in sports performance, Injury prevention, and post injury return to sport/exercise.

What makes me most proud in what I do is that I can help people improve their quality of life. Yes, it is great when an overweight and unhealthy client can lose some weight, but the best part is that through working together to improve their diet and exercise regiments, we improve their quality of life. They feel better, are more productive, move easier, increase the longevity of their lives, and are happier and healthier.

What sets me apart from others is that I have a wide variety of people that I work with. I have my few specialties, but I am able to work with many different people all with different needs. I have had the opportunity to work with different goals such as weight loss, weight gain, body transformation, injury prevention, sports performance, and post injury return to sport.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I had a mindset of my own. I was always in a sport or playing outside. I was extremely competitive and hated losing more than I liked winning. If I wanted something I went and got it. My parents can attest to the fact that I was very driven from a young age. In sports, I was always hard on myself if I felt that I didn’t perform at my best, and my parents were always the ones to cheer me back up and to teach me that if I wanted something bad enough I had to work for it. They instilled and incredible work ethic in me, and these are things I have carried with me now into my adult life.
