Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeron Pierce.
Jeron, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hola my name is Jeron Pierce, a 28-year-old Army veteran from the small town of Culpeper, Virginia! I grew up in a strict Christian home with my mother, stepfather and five brothers and sisters. My home was far from perfect, full of dysfunction but also full of life and love! I remember random things like being dragged to church on Sunday and hearing my mom sing as a lead in the church choir filling the room with joy and bringing everyone together with music. Or like the times my stepdad would wake us up early in the morning, tell us to get dressed and when we would ask what we were doing he would smirk and tell us, “We’re taking a ride” then we’d drive thru the country and eventually wind up in Sumerduck as we were welcomed by the sounds of cars tearing up the race track! Of course, we had good times and bad but who doesn’t! Being the oldest out of the kids, around 17 years old I figured that I had to set a good example for my family and become a positive role model.
I was working as a cashier at the local movie theater when I had a vision of me as an old man still working at the movie theater years later, this was when I knew I had to make a move and see the world or I would be “trapped” in my little town like everyone else I knew. Two days after high school graduation in 2009, I left for the Army in order to find myself and see the world! It wasn’t until I deployed to Iraq in June 2010, that I had finally found my calling which I believe is music. I had been making beats on the computer for a few years but when I was out there I realized that I had a voice and something to say! Music became my therapy and I always tell people that it helped me keep my sanity by taking me out of the war zone we had to live in for a year. Slowly I started recording myself and other soldiers who wanted to express themselves through rapping and singing while starting to develop an ear for recording and mixing.
In 2012, I decided that I would finish my contract with the Army and pursue school to earn my degree in Audio Production. It took a few months to transition back to civilian life then realized it was time to get to work! It took four long years but eventually, in 2017 I received my bachelor’s degree in Audio Production from the Art Institute of Colorado. Fast forward to today and now I have recorded/mixed over 40 clients around the world and at least 100 of my own tracks, performed live on TV and I have been in a few movies including “Down River” on Amazon. I currently run a home studio (Jay J’s Recording Studio in Aurora) where I collab with other artists in the area while perfecting my own material with my crew “C2S2” consisting of other dope artists who want to share their story with the world! I could go in for hours but I feel this was the easiest way to briefly describe how I got to where I am today and I am so thankful for this opportunity to share my story with you, if anything I hope my story inspires people to get up and change their circumstances if they don’t like where they are in life. A lot of people tell me that I’m lucky, I just smile and tell them “I created this!” 😊
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some of the struggles were just me finding myself and growing as a person. When I started music in Iraq I wasn’t even 21 yet but I had a lot of pressure on me to become a man and make sure that my fellow soldiers were safe by making sure that they could communicate with each other every time they went out of the wire for missions by fixing their radios, computers in a timely manner even if I didn’t know exactly what I was doing. After the Army, another struggle was adjusting back to civilian life and a normal schedule (Imagine being on call 24/7 for a year straight). Things just aren’t the same when you come back from deployment… I’ve always been a loner but being in the service definitely makes it easy for me to forget to be on my phone, deal with social media, and even check in on my family but they know I mean well and I am working toward a better life for us all!
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I grew up with music as a big part of my life, whether it was being in the school and church choirs, or being the go-to guy for mixed CDs in school. I have always known the power of music and how it brings people of all races, genders and likeminded individuals together, and I want everyone to experience the amazing feelings that it brings me when we get to share our thoughts that may otherwise be kept inside our minds and never see the life of day! I’m most proud of my ability to closely hear someone’s vision and bring it into existence better than how they imagined it! The feeling is extremely satisfying! As far as setting myself apart, I can only say that my story is different but I’m human just like the rest of us and when you need someone to connect or talk to I’m genuinely here to listen to your problems, excitement and any other feelings and channel them into music in the most positive way I can!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I could name a million people but honestly, I learn best from other people’s triumphs and mistakes and apply it to my situation or music. My family has always been there to support me and I couldn’t do this without them!
