Meet Jessica Moore of The Unmasked Podcast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Moore.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I think there has always been a burning passion in me to get to know people, to dig deep, to have authentic conversations, and to hear individual’s stories. You know – the nitty gritty! There’s something about knowing where people come from—what they have gone through—that just intrigues me. However, I never really tapped into that passion up until my mid-twenties when I went abroad and lived with different families and did life with them. The more I discovered about myself as I was growing into my own, I realized I really LOVE hearing people’s journeys! I learn I gain perspective and compassion. It enriches my life!

When I was living in Palestine, I met a college professor from Brooklyn, and we started chatting. I told him why I was living in Palestine, and he said, “Just by you being here and putting yourself in others shoes and living in their reality, will be the greatest education you will ever get.” And his words have stuck with me ever since.

I think he’s right! I wasn’t great in school, but one thing that I love is connecting with people on a deep level. Attempting to understand by listening and being in their reality is what I thrive on.

That is why I created the Unmasked Podcast!

The Unmasked Podcast is a chance for everyday life people to be real, bold, and honest about just how life really is. They share bits and pieces of their journey. We are so good at hiding, pretending, moving on, and sweeping our lives under the rug. And it saddens me to know that each of us have stories that stay untold and life experiences that stay unshared; we lose authenticity. It fascinates me that we could learn so much about ourselves and about each other if we dug a little deeper and were open. Everyone’s story has so much value to it. Value in the hurts, the struggles, the heartbreaks, the mountain top experiences, the happy opportune moments! It’s all significant and of great importance to paint the whole picture of who a person is.

Our stories shape and form who we are. They explain why we do what we do, why we think the way we think, and why we are the way we are. We have no idea how our stories could change a persons heart or perspective; they could encourage and inspire. The Unmasked Podcast has provided me with an amazing opportunity to dig deep with people and have authentic conversations.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Anything that requires you to be outside your comfort zone is never a smooth road, and I have definitely learned to appreciate that! I used to run away from things that seemed hard and challenging because I was afraid I would fail or look foolish. The biggest struggle, besides the technical side of things of getting a podcast all set up, was getting out of my head and fighting the lies against me. I was nervous that people would not be interested in my podcast. What if nobody listened? What if no one liked my content? I have no idea why I would get embarrassed or feel silly when I told people about my podcast idea! But heres the thing, some people will think it is dumb. Some people will not see the purpose. I came to realize that, if something is on my heart and mind, I have to do something about it. I had to let go and get past the fear of what people will think. Never did I imagine that starting a podcast was something I would do. EVER! Then one day I simply decided that I was going to do it—in spite of my doubts and fears. I knew that if it was on my mind then it must have a purpose. Since it launched in March 2019, I have close to 2,000 downloads! Obviously, some people out there are benefiting from the episodes. And that’s worth fighting through the fears.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Unmasked Podcast with Jess Moore story. Tell us more about the business.
On the Unmasked Podcast, I have a guest join me as they share a mostly unknown part of their life story. My hope is to bring connection, relatability, and growth to the person sharing as well as to the people listening. At the end of sharing their story, I ask some fun questions like, “What is your most embarrassing moment?” I LOVE hearing people’s embarrassing moments. Gotta have some laughs on this podcast too! After the interview, I recap the conversation and provide some takeaways from the person’s story.

What I am most proud of with The Unmasked Podcast is that people have agreed to come on and be vulnerable. I am proud of my friends who decided to go deep with me and broadcast our conversation out into the world for others. I am so proud of and thankful for them. I really do believe that when we face the fear of being vulnerable and honest about just how life really is now or was in the past, we will find so much freedom! I love that this podcast provides a chance to grow outside of the box, to be inspired, to go against the current trend of hiding, to dig beyond the highlight reel of social media, and to cultivate a culture of permission to be real.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
It is fortunate that I am a hairstylist at a barbershop and have years of experience participating in intriguing conversations. I don’t really believe in luck, but I do believe that my faith plays a major role in my life journey. My faith places me with the right people, in the right experiences, at just the right time. Everything happens for a reason, and this podcast is no exception! 😉
