Meet Jessica Olma of Scribe Syndicate in Greenwood Village (DTC)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Olma.

Jessica, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Years ago, I was a stay-at-home mom. When my kids got older, I needed something to keep my mind engaged as well as a new career. The gap in my resume made it hard to obtain gainful employment. By taking advantage of my natural skills and getting out to network events, I was able to build a business of my own through word of mouth and referrals. Writing has always been a passion of mine. As I research for new clients, I have learned interesting things about businesses across all industries. I once wrote for a manufacturing client for over a year on the benefits of the jute plant and uses for burlap. From writing for pennies per word to supporting other contracted writers on larger writing projects, it has been a character-building experience, to say the least.

Now I work with business owners updating their website pages for a new professional look, supply them with blog article material monthly, produce landing page and newsletter copy with the occasional interview or book edit. I have clients on both coasts since I can work remotely. I do face to face consultations for people who live nearby but otherwise do phone calls or Zoom to discuss concepts. Copywriting, storytelling, and editing are all services web designers need for their clients, and we partner well together to complete projects. One of my biggest clients is a digital marketing firm that needs articles for client website backlinks regularly.

All this funds my love of travel and the outdoors. I hike on the weekends and make at least one trip to the beach each year. My two girls both live on the east coast one is a technical writer, and the other does graphic design and illustration. I enjoy health and fitness as I am active, work out, and focus on eating well. A good crime novel and time at the pool is my idea of relaxing. I was born in Vancouver, Canada but spent most of my life in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Being in Colorado reminds me of my childhood in Wyoming and Washington state.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I started my new business, I had some financial roadblocks. It was a long journey that required patience and constant reminders that I was on a path to achieve an important goal. More than once, I questioned whether I had made the right decision to invest in my own business. My family shared their concerns and doubts about my struggle. I strengthened my resolve and kept taking steps each day to meet deadlines and form business relationships. In the end, it was vital for me to pursue my natural abilities. It has allowed me the flexibility to work my own hours from any location that is convenient for me. I remind myself that I invented the name Scribe Syndicate, indicating that the business was not a one-person show but would grow over time. I chose to use the wing from the foot of the Greek God Hermes into my logo because I would be delivering messages between businesses and individuals. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on, and proudest accomplishments.
Scribe Syndicate is a full-service provider of written and edited digital content using targeted keywords to promote individual brands. We also provide web design and marketing firms with writing support for client website pages, recurring blog articles, and backlinked article resources used for search engine optimization (SEO) purposes.

We specialize in service-based businesses needing organic educational, informational, and entertaining material about their brand to engage consumers and build continuing relationships through email newsletters, brochures, and eBooks. Some industries that I’ve come to know really well include health insurance, holistic nutrition and wellness, digital marketing, and technology.

I am proud of conducting quality research to learn about a client’s business and the topics that surround what they do. I want them to look professional online, so they can share a service that is valuable to others. First impressions are powerful. Web designers don’t have time to craft compelling copy on top of the graphics that incorporate features and functions for user-friendly websites. Marketing firms won’t promote an unattractive or poorly written site either. Business owners are swamped with daily operations. At Scribe Syndicate, we can help them.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck, in general, is just about making decisions when opportunities present themselves. If you aren’t open to making changes as you develop in life and business, you will see barriers rather than possibilities. These can translate into a perception of either good or bad luck, depending on the goals you set and whether you are on a path to achieve them.

I believe life provides daily learning opportunities and a chance to evolve and realize a greater potential. I am enthusiastic while uncovering information through researching and writing, consistently able to add to my knowledge base. I had to make a conscious decision to pursue this as a career. Like most, I had a couple of hard years and knew I had to push through it. Then, I contacted a lender and qualified for my first business loan to expand and contract other writers. My business plan had to be overhauled, but when I was done, I was armed with data, ideas, and resources. I began focusing on organic content and keywords for digital SEO marketing initiatives. I reached out to web designers and marketing firms and formed relationships.

Most recently, I learned how technology or artificial intelligence would impact my industry and began investigating and using it for large volume projects. It came in handy for backlinks for multiple websites being marketed by digital SEO firms. Each step I made was a conscious choice to act on the information I had at hand. When “bad luck” happens, it becomes a challenge to turn around a temporary obstacle.
