Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy “Beast” Siler.
Jimmy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
24mos ago I went through a “mid-life” crisis of sorts, I guess is the technical way to put it. Separation from my marriage of 12 yrs and not at all a “pretty one.” Left me w/ only a few pieces of what used to be quite an extensive selection of drum equipment & a studio that had been rented in only my name, otherwise, I’d have been left w/ nothing. Homeless, a touring drummer now w/ no drums, so no longer in a job touring, no vehicle & completely alone.
The only thing I had left was me, the drums the ex-wife couldn’t get & pieces other drummers donated to me just so I could play & that’s what I did. For three months, I remained mostly in a 12×12 room, sleeping on a couch, playing drums & more days than not, when not playing, crying my eye’s out & truly hurting, I never hurt that like that before. The time came eventually for me to leave the studio, back out into the real world. Through some very dear friends, I was able to buy enough time to meet Tim Board (Front Range Radio/Tri-Lakes Radio). He managed a meeting w/ CFO Michael Bailey of Tri-Lakes Radio, we instantly hit it off & we began the start of Night’s w/ Beast, approx six months after my separation. Now running for approx 18mos straight. Mon-Thurs 5 pm-8 pm www.trilakesradio.com.
It is through my being a musician & knowing folks at different levels, how things work for us as independent artists & how we sometimes can get past “red-tape” that has really been the biggest asset in making/doing all of the connections, tagging bands on Facebook I intend on playing on my shows that evening or booking them for events, competitions, my attending their shows, sharing their events, sitting in when called upon to do so (even at a moment’s notice), etc. What also has helped has been the sage advice I have been given from time to time by some extremely wise & experienced folks. Not on how I do it or the idea’s I come up w/, no (my path I am learning as I am going), they are there to make sure I remain humble & truthful.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had two partners. On the 1st I started the shows w/. 2nd was a replacement where it ended pretty much the same as the 1st one did. All I can say about this is, it’s tough having to keep starting over. Labeling & consistency suffers greatly. Plus you have to “deal” w/ all of the past issues they cause & then also “deal” w/ repercussions of what comes after the separation(s). So for now, I am happy w/ it just being Nights w/ Beast. Besides this, most have been pretty awesome.
Please tell us about your work.
I am the Program Director, Radio Host for TLR’s NIghts w/ Beast on that station Mon-Thurs 5 pm-8 pm. We regularly reach 55-60,000 people a month & as far as I know are the biggest NATIVE internet radio station in CO. Or we are now. We have licenses to play ALL the music in every country in the world (Labelled or not).
Among my normal duties, my 24/7 responsibility that I specialize in here is the acquisition of talent in all areas of entertainment or at least I “lead up” this dept. Production. As I previously mentioned; being an active musician has helped w/ this.
I’m known for “being everywhere a lot of the time.” Or this is what I seem to hear others in Denver said. In my role here, what I am most proud of you have already seen. Quality people who also play music at a high level mentioning my name to folks such as yourselves. I included a picture of my drum cover. Every band on there I have either gigged w/ (subbed) or alongside or booked for myself & paid for in one of my festivals/events. It doesn’t contain every one of course, but things such as these are PRICELESS to me & so it’s though other folks that I have worked w/, worked for, those who support others I’ve helped get into this & those who support me now I am by far MOST proud of.
What set’s me apart from others?
Ask others like Andy Mertz, Spencer Townsend Hughes, Sarah Ashlee Shuel, Nick Duarte, Ty Bray maybe a few others; hopefully, they can say? Because I do not honestly know. I LOVE what I get to do. To spend time w/ musicians, especially after I get to know them is the one place I feel most comfortable in business & life, generally speaking. The moment they become more than biz associates & become good friends. There is NOTHING like it in life for me, not anymore. It really can be like finding “lost brother’s & sister’s.” And I know what that’s like, but that’s another story.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Oh wow. My absolute favorite hands down thing to do when I was a kid was kissing the girls. Especially when we all got caught up in a game of truth or dare, spin the bottle. You know that time you KNEW you most likely would never get another shot at kissing that “one” again cuz she usually dated the Capt of the football team or prom king type. Why I became a musician in the 1st place, the ladies! Oh to be young again.
