Meet JK Joung of Envision Eye Care in Aurora

Today we’d like to introduce you to JK Joung.

Thanks for sharing your story with us JK. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My wife (eye doctor) and I (former corporate strategist) started an optometry practice in October 2015. We wanted to start a different kind of optometry practice that serves under-served consumer segments, such as immigrant population, including Asian Americans. We found that many immigrants don’t regularly go to eye doctor’s office partly because they don’t know how the system works.

When they do, they go to cheap optical chains, such as America’s Best due to its advertisement. Worse, there are many immigrant elders who need various medical needs, such as cataract surgeries. Hence we want to provide superior eye care products and services in a cost-competitive way in the most ethnically diverse area of Colorado (Colorado is about 90% white).

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We built a beautiful office from scratch rather than buying an existing office. That is, we didn’t have an existing patient base. Hence it is difficult to attract our target patient population fast enough. Financially it was difficult for the first two years. To make matters worse, in the second year, our office was broken in with a lot of damages. Also in the second year, Colorado’s Medicaid system had an internal issue and stopped paying for Medicaid patients (we were still unpaid over $100,000 claims from the state).

Please tell us about Envision Eye Care.
We aim to provide superior eye care to a diverse patient population. We receive rave reviews from our patients. In fact, we have the highest Google rating in our area. This is mainly because people work in our office share the same value of providing superior eye care as best as we can – like your neighborhood doctor’s office with high tech equipment and system appropriate for the 21st century.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Everything. Mostly having good people in our office and able to retain them.
