Meet Joey Hoisescu and Rhianon Schuman of Denver Barbell Club in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Hoisescu and Rhianon Schuman.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Joey and Rhianon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We started out I think like most successful businesses do; by identifying a need for an Olympic weightlifting-specific gym in Denver and filling that gap. There were literally no weightlifting facilities in the city so we rented a 500 sq ft space from Crossfit Lodo and started running classes three times per week. Eventually, the demand for our coaching and programming overwhelmed our original space and we relocated to our current space inside the LoDo warehouse. Now we have six coaches, 25 hours of coaching per week and the beginnings of an awesome powerlifting program. I think the two biggest factors in our growth was our focus on quality coaching and building a facility where the most committed strength athletes are able to train.

Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, the road has been pretty smooth. We’ve dealt with growing pains a couple times when the demand outgrew the space so we made the decision to expand. We’re in one of those periods again, but we’re making it work.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Denver Barbell Club – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Denver Barbell Club specializes in coaching Olympic Weightlifting and Powerlifting as well as using both sports to train runners, cyclists, rugby players, etc. We’re known for our outstanding coaching, charismatic environment and commitment to awesome equipment.

We are most proud to be the leaders in the Denver strength community and bringing weightlifting and powerlifting to so many new people.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love the young energy of the city. It seems to be full of people who are here to better themselves and the people around them.

Obviously, the rising cost of space is a big hurdle for us to overcome. We’d love to have a 10,000 sq ft space, but the economics are simply not sustainable.
