Today we’d like to introduce you to John Gies.
John, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After spending over two decades selling call center outsourcing solutions I came to a crossroads. The business was changing. The company I had been with for 14 years was bought and decimated by the purchasing company. I continued in the industry with limited success.
I remember calling on a CFO of a large health system in Denver. I had just demonstrated to him, using his own numbers how he could add $400,000 to his bottom line. He told me that this was a rounding error!
As I was struggling to find a new career I reflected back on the work I had done with a coach a few years earlier. I really liked speaking (as a Toastmaster). I liked facilitating difficult conversations and I really enjoyed mentoring and coaching new salespeople.
So I began training and coaching as a contractor for a couple of companies. I taught sales methodology, I delivered Coach the Coach training helping sales managers deploy a new initiative with their teams and I had a chance to coach sales executives as they created high performing sales teams. The challenge with being a contractor is when they are busy you have work and when they are not neither are you.
I set out to create my own solutions around communication and the impact it has on performance. Our performance as individuals and on organizational financial performance. This has led to some coaching and training opportunities.
Today I am a small business and executive coach. I help small business owners generate new clients, business and revenue without spending more money on advertising and marketing. Many small business owners are proud of their quality and experience. But if that is all you market you sound like everyone else.
I am on a mission to help Main Street Thrive so that no matter what happens on Wall Street our communities thrive. I know that as we manage our communications and we work to benefit all of the stakeholders in our business, (Customers, employees, vendors, the environment, the community AND the Investors) companies perform better financial and so does everyone else.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
NO, it has not. The first challenge was getting over the termination from a job in an industry I had been very successful in for over two decades. This caused me to question a whole host of beliefs. Then there were the ups and downs of learning new material delivering and seeing change with the client organizations and getting excited only to have my clients contract dry up.
I could go on. But Who wants to dwell on the struggle.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I help small business owners and others learn to communicate effectively with their marketplace and their stakeholders to achieve performance. By clarifying the marketing message and thinking through the offer (not necessarily a discount) they can create new customers without investing more money in marketing or advertising.
Within larger organizations, I work with executives to apply the psychology, structure and cadence of communication to create high performing teams.
Most proud of? The changes that my clients have made in their organizations and themselves. People have transformed their careers. Improved team performance by 37% and made a difference for their employees.
What sets me apart from many business coaches is that I bring a set of tools and accountability. Many coaches are taught to help the client deal with the agenda (crisis) of the day. I will continue to bring the client back to the goals that they established at the beginning. Always making sure that those goals have not changed.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My personal life vision is a world where people are inspired to leverage their power and influence to create collaborative and sustainable organizations. I support this by helping courageously lead from a place of love and not fear.
So success is world that looks like this one client at a time. While creating a main street economy that is thriving.
And while generating a stream of income that allows me and my colleagues to serve the community in bigger ways.
