Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Polovina.
Jordan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Western Pennsylvania. I started beatboxing and rapping as a young kid in the neighborhood, having fun and fooling around. I also started with my first instrument in school in PA. I started with bass clarinet, I wanted a cello but my school didn’t have one, so I would have to wait a cpl years to get one. My mother met a young man who was a heavy metal drummer and was studying to be a music theory professor, he was the one to help me get a cello and lessons at IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) he was also a severe alcoholic and turned out to be somewhat abusive, I wouldn’t change anything because the knowledge I received from him got me started on my path and helped me find myself through music. He was accepted to CU boulder to finish his music degree, so the three of us moved to Colorado.
I was in freshman year of high school when we moved to Boulder and I had no idea how different it was going to be. I quickly found all the wrong friends and places, got heavily involved in drugs and alcohol and got in a lot of trouble. While falling down the wrong path, music was a constant regardless. I have been completely obsessed with music most of my life and that’s one thing that has never changed. Around that time, I met Steven and Joe, the other members of my group “Whiskey Blanket” after rocking in boulder a cpl years at house parties and such we were offered a real show on campus at CU. We oversold that show then booked at the Fox. We oversold that one too! I thought it was really cool. More drugs, more booze, and an ego that was completely out of control. I was about 19. some years of self-inflicted pain, jail time, and many humbling experiences on and off the road helped me to figure myself out and clean up my act. I am now 35 years old, still obsessed, and still learning every day. I have had some regionally successful music (Grim & Darling) and some total flops. I am now working for a great talent agency called “Imprint Group” and have a pretty steady solo career (pre-pandemic) and still working with the bands that we have formed over the years.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Coming from very humble beginnings, money has always been a challenge, and I got in my own way often. I used to make a lot of excuses for myself and was always blaming the world around me. I think every artist has obstacles and challenges but I feel like mine were really always myself. These days I just try to stay focused avoid negative self-talk.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I have always been known for putting on a show, going crazy on stages, entertaining people, and leaving it all out there. Beatboxing, rapping, playing cello, stage dives, and sometimes getting injured while doing it. This part will always be special to me. I love performing. That being said, I have started shifting in a new direction. For quite a while now, I have been producing my own music. Top to bottom. Production, recording, shooting video, editing video etc… I feel like my passion is now investing time in other people. I want to make records with talented artists who maybe don’t have the means to make something happen. Producing is something I can realistically do till I die, so I am learning everything I can to make it a plausible career for the rest of my life. I am almost always most proud of the last song I made. then on to the next.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. You get what you give. Sometimes it is just the right place and time.
