Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Uhl.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Wisconsin and quickly found a passion for the mountains at a young age. My affinity for the outdoors led me to photography and filmmaking. Spending time outside with a camera in my hand was the only thing that really made sense to me. I moved to Colorado in 2014 with a few friends in the business and figured out how to make it work. I have spent my time in the west making documentaries, creating brand films and chasing a balance between meaningful work and play. That balance is really something that has become increasingly more important to me through the years.
In my free time, I greatly enjoy challenging myself in ultra-endurance mountain activities. Pushing my personal limits, physically and mentally, translates into progress for my work and daily life. I take great pride in being self-sufficient in the mountains while being fully capable of producing quality media in challenging situations and terrain.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s never very smooth. I think I’d rather be on the rough road anyway, it’s more interesting and it makes the smoother parts all the more enjoyable. I’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of awesome folks, travel around the world, see amazing things, with that has always come frustrations. It could be butting heads creatively or having to negotiate on a low budget project, there’s always a bump or two in the road.
Working for myself is great, but when work is slim it’s easy to doubt absolutely everything, and that can be a slippery slope. I question whether or not I should just give up and do something else all the time. I find a fluctuation in passion to be quite normal among creative folks. I have found that the best cure for doubt is community. The friends I’ve made through working in the creative space help me on a regular basis and I am grateful for that. Just knowing I’m in the same boat as other folks and talking about that really helps.
Please tell us about MIDDLEWELL.
MIDDLEWELL is a production house focused on telling stories of craft, community and forward motion. This company exists because of a vast community of skilled individuals who take pride in their craft.
MIDDLEWELL is new on the scene but its people are far from green. For years I worked under my own name for various production companies and freelance gigs. Getting to work on projects I had dreamed about. However, at the end of the day, I never felt like it was a part of the bigger picture. Thus MIDDLEWELL was born, out of the desire to push harder and create change, in the big picture.
MIDDLEWELL has a mantra “Here for now”. More specifically: Begin where you stand, create with intention, give voice to the unheard, tell the untold, build with generosity, hone your craft, seek understanding, go and live unfettered.
What were you like growing up?
I was a distracted kid. I never really did well in school, I was always staring out the window, dreaming up what I could be doing out there, pretending the clouds were mountains. I was always interested in building things and using my hands but never had the patience to really make anything of quality. I spent a lot of time playing guitar. In high school, I finally picked up a camera and realized it was something I could focus on. I am grateful to my high school photo teacher who helped me and my parents understand that I could find a career in having a camera in my hands. Without that nudge, I don’t know where I’d be today.
