Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Ernesto Chacin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am from Valencia, Venezuela. Ten years ago, I started in this world of ice cream with my family. Opening with my brother, a small shop Soft ice cream shop in Valencia-Venezuela, called Mi barquilla Express. Thus beginning my passion for ice cream. It was years of dedication and continuous learning. Thanks to its great success, three years later, we decided to open another location in the same city, this time in Gelato, called Mi Barquilla VIP.
After three years, continuing with ideas of new investments, that, at that time our country Venezuela did not have the suitable conditions to continue investing. We made the decision to start our business abroad in Guayaquil (Ecuador) and Denver (United States). Denver was chosen because it is a city I have visited for 20 years constantly and we saw it as a city with many opportunities and business growth. In March 2019, we opened in Denver Pozzetti Gelato.
I have had the good fortune of having parents who have guided me and supported me at all times, personally and professionally. This has been key to achieving my goals. Part of my success as an entrepreneur I should initially thank Oscar Lopresti, who sent my brother and me, in this world of Ice Cream, in addition to my family, current partners (Nestor Chacin, Hugo Rodriguez, Ender Rodriguez and Hector Carrillo, who have believed and supported me in this business project, additionally my right hand Adriana Mejia, current Manager of Pozzetti Gelato, who has accompanied me from Venezuela as Manager of the branches in Valencia, thanks to her professionalism and dedication she has been a key person To achieve our success.
We chose Denver because it is a city of great business growth. We are located in Stapleton, where we have received great support from the community. We definitely recommend Denver as a city to undertake, there is great support for small businesses.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a difficult road, for us as foreigners, but very satisfying for learning. The main obstacle presented to me is that my residence is in Venezuela and it is difficult not to be constantly present in the formation of the business since its construction, permitting and opening. Because of this the opening times were extended many times.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our business model is based on the sale of artisanal Italian ice cream (gelato), prepared with high quality, all-natural ingredients. Our gelato is 100% handcrafted in our shops. Gelato is a traditional Italian ice cream which is displayed in cases and which has very specific qualities: it is more delicate, creamier, more full-bodied, and has lower fat content than regular ice cream. The entire elaboration process takes place in the store and in plain view of the customers. Customers can see, enjoy, and get familiar with the elaboration process, so they can be sure of the freshness and quality of the product they are consuming.
Our gelato is prepared in a specific gelato maker reminiscent of traditional Italian… gelato makers. Our gelato is displayed in pozzetti (traditional Italian display cases) to bring to mind old-time Italian gelaterias. We have more than 32 flavors between gelato and sorbet.
Additionally, we offer Panini (Italian sandwich), coffee, Gelato Milkshake. We continually support Schools, churches, Institutions, Organizations of our community or outsiders, holding events or sales in their locations and donating 20% of sales. Additionally, we have a gelato cart to offer our catering services for social events, parties, weddings, corporate events.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our future plans are based on opening new offices of Pozzetti Gelato & Coffee as a franchise in the United States, as well as the development of new products (pastry), new flavors. Our purpose is to innovate.
