Meet Juana Rincon of Unnido Counseling in Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juana Rincon.

Juana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I never thought I would end up living in the United States. My desire to come to do the Masters in Contemplative Psychotherapy was sparked while living in Colombia and doing a short program in Transpersonal Psychology with a therapist that had graduated from Naropa University. I heard about Boulder for the first time then and found about the Contemplative psychotherapy program which was exactly what I was looking for as I envisioned a therapy practice where I could integrate Buddhist teachings with clinical work. Holding that vision in mind, I embarked on a one-year trip to India which had been a dream I had since I was in high school, thinking “I need to do this first”. Unknowingly, that “trip” was the beginning of another long long journey. Hard to describe and speak to in this space, but basically, a pretty intense life-altering experience that took me three years to assimilate and integrate fully; pushing my dream to study at Naropa until 2011.

I got accepted that year but again life circumstances forced me to postpone everything one more year; and I finally made it to Naropa in 2012, almost seven years after that seed was planted in my mind. The following three years at Naropa implied a lot of hard personal and professional growth, full of challenge, richness, aliveness, light and darkness too! It’s been five years since I graduated and I am living my dream. I created a holistic therapy practice called Unnido Counseling. Un-nido stands for “a-nest” in Spanish, which alludes to the power of a nurturing holding environment that we all need to grow wings to fly. Unnido also alludes to union, which in my practice reflects the purpose of the Yoga path: to realize that individual and universal consciousness are one. These principles are at the core of the work I do.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. There have been many challenges and obstacles along the way; but I have also had a lot of support, guidance and blessed with so much grace. There is nothing smooth about being an immigrant and trying to make a life in another country, building everything from ground zero. In a way, it has also been a big adventure of discovering how to work and live in this land, with seasons, with a completely different culture, with different rules for everything. There has been a lot of growing pains, adjusting, resisting, adapting, acculturating, learning, falling and getting up countless times. Obstacles in the form of health issues, relationship issues, general struggles, culture shock, racism, not being able to express myself in my mother language, the need for constant code-switching, etc. I am grateful for all these challenges because they prove over and over again how deep my roots are within myself, and they allow me to see that I am capable of growth and change beyond imagination.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Unnido Counseling – what should we know?
My business is called Unnido Counseling and it is based in Boulder, Colorado, although I offer services to clients in other countries through video-calls. Unnido was conceived as a holistic psychotherapy practice where balancing body-mind-spirit is the ultimate goal. I offer individual therapy to adolescents and adults who want to increase their sense of wellbeing and be free from suffering and its causes; not just to get rid of symptoms but to know and understand on a deeper level what is creating dissatisfaction in their lives. I love working with sensitive souls who are in search for truth and haven’t found their power in their sensitivity. In general, I like helping others create the causes of happiness in their lives which has to do a lot with connecting with our life’s purpose, our gifts, and with our inner voice that always knows what is best for us.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Staying connected with the love for what I do and the joy I feel around my work is the key to my success.
