Meet Juaquenn Gunn, II

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juaquenn Gunn, II.

Hi Juaquenn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I am from Detroit and I have always been attracted to the sound of Hip Hop. It just really resonated and inspired me. I connected with it at an early age. I found myself just wanting to be a part of the culture. The more I dove into it, I started finding my own voice. I also started connecting with artists that spoke to me…taking pieces from them and grafting my own lane. And here we are today! I’m still dreaming, still loving Hip Hop.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has absolutely not been a smooth road. One of the main struggles has been finding myself within the genre. Often times we make comparisons to those that are successful so we immolate them while we extinguish who we are just get where they are. The struggle between doing what you love which isn’t paying the bills and doing what you hate which does pay the bills. Doing what you don’t like takes away time from what you do like. There is struggle in finding that balance as well.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Currently, I am a math interventionist at an elementary school by day. I am also a video editor, director, writer, motivational speaker, hip hop artist, and soon to be published author. I am most proud of my resilience. I often feel like giving up – I just don’t. I keep trying, keep believing, and I keep going. What sets me apart is my story. I grew up around the hood but I’m not a hood dude. My response is different from what rappers are known for. My response is faith, being positive, non-violent, and not misogynistic. And lastly, I am a cancer-survivor. All of these facets of my story shape the art that I produce and I am known for being inspiring through any of the creative outlets I use, especially my music.

What does success mean to you?
Before it was material things but it has evolved now to peace, love, family, and the progressive realization of worthy ideal.
