Today we’d like to introduce you to Kadija Taylor.
Kadija, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my real estate endeavors in property management in 2005. I had just returned from an extended time overseas and needed a job. Thankfully, one of my best friends was hiring for a leasing position at her property and asked if I’d be interested. I jumped at the opportunity! That one decision led me to affordable housing where I spent 11 years serving the needs of people who both need and deserve a place to call home. In 2016, I made the decision to fulfill a lifelong goal of going into real estate full time and throwing my hat at design while I was at it. I was starved for creativity and it was time to give life to that part of me.
So, I took a leap of faith in August 2016, resigned from my position as a regional manager from one of the largest affordable housing providers in Denver. To say that was the “right move” is an understatement. For the first two years in business, I hung my license with Ion Real Estate. A downtown boutique real estate company that provided me with the intimate setting I needed to figure out who I was going to be in this industry. Thankfully, what I learned is there’s no one more important than being yourself.
In April of 2019, I spread my wings and started my own company Home & Sanctuary where you can find both real estate and design services. My passion is rooted in helping clients purchase homes and continuing the relationship by providing interior design services. My belief is that the space you occupy should serve you mentally, spiritually, and energetically. Home is not just where you live but the energy you introduce into it that can restore, comfort and rejuvenate the whole person.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My biggest obstacle/challenge has been myself. Finding space to quiet the negative talk in my mind that says your not smart enough, unqualified, to unconventional, and unworthy of this dream you have has been the real struggle. I have had to expand spiritually, mentally, and emotionally in ways, I didn’t think were possible to aid in not allowing those thoughts to kill the passion and purpose for my work. I am aware more than ever that challenges are a part of living. I make the decision every day to know that how I approach them will, in turn, decide how long they present themselves as challenges.
Please tell us about Home & Sanctuary.
Home & Sanctuary is a real estate and design firm whose founding principle is that that space is sacred, the land is spiritual, and home should be your sanctuary. I believe that the most important thing I can do for any client is to build a relationship through listening. You learn so much about what a person’s needs and wants by closing your mouth and opening up your heart. These are the two things I most known for and most proud of in my work. Clients walk away from there experience knowing that they are cared for.
What sets me apart from others is my focus to not worry about what “sets me apart.” Often times we find ourselves so busy trying to discover what that question means that we forget to just show up as ourselves. We all bring something special to the table and there is room for everyone. A belief in celebrating my peers!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
To fully be present for everything. To not worry so much about the future and regret the past that I miss the magic of now.
