Meet Kandice Martinez of Indie Salons Luxury Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandice Martinez.

Kandice, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been in the beauty business for 17 years working in a variety of areas, I’ve been a district manager of multiple retail stores and I was with Aveda working with stylists at salons for several years. When I met the owners at Indie Salons Luxury Studios, I knew I had to join the organization as the Colorado Market Manager.

Helping stylists and beauty artists achieve their dreams is our mission at Indie. We provide modern customizable luxury salon studios, a positive community of successful entrepreneurs and all kinds of business support including a wholesale beauty program, events and education opportunities. Stylists who’ve never made six figures in a salon have joined us at Indie and have exceeded their wildest dreams as entrepreneurs in our community.

It is so exciting to be part of their journey and their success!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think there are always learnings any time you enter a new business. For both our Boulder and our Denver locations, we had people who needed to move in asap, even before all the final construction details were put in place. So while it was challenging, we figured out a way to make it work for them.

I also work a lot with stylists and beauty professionals who are interested to see if moving to a salon studio is right for them. I help them evaluate their specific numbers and situation. As a real life example, someone who has 25 clients a week, and an average service ticket of $80, can typically make $36,000 more a year in an Indie salon suite than in a commission salon. However not everyone has the numbers and the clients to make the move, so we’ve learned to be selective in who joins the Indie community. If someone isn’t ready yet, we help them understand what it will take for them to get there.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you guys do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
Indie Salons rents brand new customizable salon studios to beauty professionals (stylists, estheticians, brow/lash artists, make-up artists, nails), and we provide tools and a supportive community so they can achieve their dreams. We are known for our modern, friendly vibe and our tight-knit community of talented beauty entrepreneurs.

I’m super proud of the fact that so many people in our community have become successful entrepreneurs with our support. We have locations in Boulder, Denver and are opening a Lone Tree location in June.

In terms of things that set us apart for beauty entrepreneurs (and their clients):

  • We offer a brand new beautiful and friendly environment that allows Indies to create their own brand experience.
  • We provide incredible support including business consultations, a welcome kit, move in support, our wholesale beauty supply program to help them make more money on well-known professional products, and a rent rewards program.
  • We have a great education program, ranging from tax advice to balayage to social media classes. We recently brought in a well-known celebrity stylist and social media guru Olivia Smalley @omgartistry to teach for us, and we are shortly announcing a big name in the hair industry from California who will be teaching a balayage and business class for us.
  • And, we have a selfie-station at our locations to add some fun for clients and help spread the word about each Indie’s services.

Our Indies are very talented so if you are looking for a great new stylist, esthetician, lashes, brows or nails person, please check out www.indiesalons.com/services. We also have a fun, great Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/indiesalons/, you should definitely check us out on Instagram!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Our owners, Courtland and Lisa Peddy, are huge proponents of entrepreneurship and are a big part of our overall success. On the facilities side of our business, Matt Eaton works on construction and making move-ins smooth. I’ve also had personal mentors in my own career who’ve been hugely influential along the way, helping me develop my sales, business, communication and organization skills, all of which have brought me to being the Market Manager at Indie! And, each of our Indies deserves a shoutout, they are each so talented and living the dream of being their own boss!

Pricing:

  • Our private luxury studios start at $229 a week, we also offer shared studios for doubles and triples.
