Meet Kate Mulheron of Earth Ways Yoga in Boulder and North Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Mulheron.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am the Creator of Earth Ways Yoga and this is a love song to my healing of 42 years!! The very first trauma of my life was when my father took his own life when I was five years old and that began a passage of life long work of healing through grief, abandonment and the very act of what love is in all of its layers!! 19 years later, my mother died of breast cancer, which as a 22-year-old was devastating but I was able to take care of her in her last five years and help her transition which changed the course of my life!! It was the first time I knew there was something other than this physical world, there was more, I could feel it, I had a knowingness, a moment when you have the honor to be there when someone transitions to the other side, it is something that cannot be explained, it stays with you. Indefinitely, this started my journey upon my spiritual path, but I would say I really didn’t step “in” until I was 37. I had two incredible children, had recently gotten divorced and was looking at what and where I wanted to go in my life, honestly, I was a bit of a mess!! My daughters got to see their mother fall apart, there were days I would sob for hours, which looking back, I know was a very important part of the process for me to not hide my feelings, the layers of healing from my daughters… they got to see me model what healing is and truly got to see me rise! I had gone to Nutrition Therapy Institute in Denver and ended up in my first Yoga Teachers Training, at Core Power kind of by accident!!

I, then, started to teach and felt so good every time I taught a class, I felt my voice was rising in its authentic power, I loved teaching to the physical form through emotions and imagery! I then ended up at Forrest Yoga Teachers Training and it changed the course of my life for sure!! I got to experience this yoga as a form of healing, of embodying “seeing” how people hold their bodies as an expression of their life’s path..like you can see where people hold their wounds. Ana Forrest was the first one to remind me of the energy worker I am today! As I entered into teaching full time as a single mother and I loved it!! As I taught more and more, sometimes 14 classes a week, I was getting sick, and it didn’t make sense, I am a clean living person that was grey every time after I taught until one night I ended up in hospital; with a 30/40 blood pressure… I was gone, I had what you would call a near death experience. It was so definitive though, I saw the “light” and knew I had to come back, it wasn’t time to go yet!! So, I came back and I then met the Native Teacher that taught me ways on how to work from the Nature Ways as a way to heal by bringing balance through Universal Flow through my “sensitive” humanness!! My teacher told me in my first session with her as I was telling her my story crying… “Dear, you are just sensitive, there is nothing wrong with you,” And it was the most relieving information ever!!

As someone who runs empathically as an intuitive, in a world that does not honor these gifts and talents nor has anyone really given me tools on how to live in a balanced way with boundaries, clearing/shielding working with the Nature Ways, Daily Rituals and honoring being sensitive. My life was never the same after I met my teacher and what started to happen was I started to bring these ways into my yoga classes until five years later, the yoga I was teaching was unlike other yogas that we had to call it what it was, Earth Ways Yoga!! What is funny, is my teacher in my first session told me to start writing everything down, that I would be creating a yoga, and I laughed at her, not believing her… and I just continued to heal and teach yoga, until five years later, I understood what she had told me in our first session together!! Earth Ways Yoga is a yoga based on three lineages, Yoga, The Nature Ways and the 5 Element Chinese Acupuncture System working with Meridians and Points as a way to map your body through, physical, emotional and energetic bodies! We are entering our third teacher’s training at the end of May!! This has been such a beautiful evolution watching how others walk into the yoga room embodying a deeper way to feel to heal working with these tools to find your own way to heal!!!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As one creates their passions, there is no neat and orderly way of doing such a thing!! As creation in nature is messy, chaotic and so beautiful… it takes the explosion of the seed you plant to burst under the earth for it to push through into what it will grow!! So, the process of creating means we have to continually connect with why we created what we created, as with anything, the purity get lost if you are not in alignment with the direction you must grow, if you do not hold integrity of why you created what you created, you will lose yourself in the process!! As I have created this yoga, people who started with me are no longer on the path and there are some who have been with me for over 10 years and as we close doors with others that need to walk another way new people step in to embrace the work!! That has been the hardest part, knowing that sometimes other people leave so others can step in..the lesson is non-attachment and TRUST!! Learning that every day we must flexible with what is today. There is a freedom there, being so open to changes and shifts as we all grow and evolve, isn’t that what we are for? Teaching a yoga that brings in so many lineages that is not necessarily mainstream , you must BELIEVE in what you are doing, because there will be others that will make you feel like what you are doing is not of value, but if you know to the depth of what you are doing is true for you, there is no way you will get off of your path!!

Earth Ways Yoga – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Earth Ways Yoga is a yoga that focuses on working through your physical, emotional, and energetic body through the bridge of your breath to sense and feel through your intuitive knowingness the layers of your healing working with Yoga, Nature Ways and 5 Element Chinese Acupuncture working with meridians and points as a way to embody tools for your balanced well being!! This yoga helps teachers find their own healing so they can be powerful teachers for others, as they teach from embodying this practice to others from a place of knowingness!! I am so proud of the students that show up to go DEEP into the work of their healing, its not easy to go deep in a culture that lives and is addicted to distraction and to have the courage to slow down and feel, brings a greater balance to each being and honestly brings greater balance to family systems and communities when we can be more aware of how we are holding ourselves. From the Native Tradition, the saying goes “me first, then how may I help you, back to me.” Meaning, learn how to self-care, have a balanced way within before you give to another and come back to finding balance within again, so you will be a more peaceful being for the work you are here to do in this world!! Earth Ways is expanding into different communities, states and countries right now, it’s super exciting and it all has to do with believing in your own gifts and talents and what you have to offer this world from a humble place of authenticity. I LOVE this work so so much and it is truly humbling to watch how others embrace this yoga for themselves!!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is an honest person by person for me. When we go TOO BIG we lose sight of what we are doing and why we are doing it, and truly you lose your rootedness to your own self. I started teaching yoga 12 years ago and I always had the philosophy if one person was affected by the class I presented, today, it was a success!! I have built my life upon this, if we get too lost in competition, of what others are doing we lose our authentic nature of what we have to offer… we, of course, will get lost in the competition, its apart of it, but learn how to bring yourself back to the richness of your gifts and that there is someone for everyone. Every being matters to me, every essence that has a body in this life matters and their evolution, so I will continue to do this work person by person and build the community I am proud of!!
