Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Jacobson.
Katelyn, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started getting into photography with disposable cameras and a cheap toy film camera when I was around ten years old. I got my first DSLR (Canon 40d) at 16 and upgraded to a full-frame camera (Canon 5d Mark ii) when I was in college. When I was in college I was going to school for Computer Science and Photo Illustration but started to feel like I was being limited and asked to stay in school longer than originally planned. I had an opportunity arise where I ended up selling almost everything I owned and biked across the US to move to Colorado. I biked around 1,500 miles across the country, meeting incredible people while also getting to document as much as possible on my cameras, both film and digital. Shortly after my time in Colorado I ended up making my photography business, Kate Rose Photography, official. Since then I’ve done a lot of branding for businesses, headshots, product photography, weddings, engagements concert photography, promos, motorcycle photography, and the like. I’d say my niché mostly is with creating emotional striking images that strive to bring the viewer to how I felt when creating a body of work.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Ha, it’s certainly not been smooth. I don’t think any business worth making ever really could exist without its challenges. I think one of my biggest struggles is trying to be seen without spending my life on my phone creating ads or trying to find ways of getting more clients. But ultimately I got into photography to create images that move my audience and bring people to a certain place and emotion. Most of what I passionately create may not be what someone chooses to pay for, and I suppose that’s a struggle in itself when you want to make a career of your art, but at the end of the day, I want to be proud of what I create regardless of the monetary amount.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a portrait and lifestyle photographer specializing in creating memorable content for brands and businesses that tell a striking story of who they are. I also work with individuals, couples, and musicians from ethereal photographs, engagements, and weddings, to promos and live concert photos.
I’d say one of my favorite moments was when I got to see a couple of my photos on a commercial during the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2016 during some work I did with Budweiser. I’ve also really liked getting to work with local bands in the Denver area. I really enjoy getting to work with members of my community and essentially bringing the artist appreciation full circle.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think I’m still working this out. The past few years have certainly had their own hardships outside of my photography business. This has caused me to really think deep down on what success means. I used to think it had to have a more tangible meaning, something I needed to show. But to be honest, I feel that now success to me is how do I feel with what I’ve accomplished? Am I happy? Am I proud of my work? If I can answer those things, that’s what I think is what success is for me personally.
