Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Skarvan.
Kathy, before we jump into specific questions about your art, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As an artist, I am driven by eye appeal. I have a passion for people, gain energy from my environment and I’m inspired by my fellow creatives. I use multidisciplinary art mediums to build my designs layer by layer. My work is the result of my artistic journey. I’m always searching for new energy to give my artwork visual vitality. My process mixes colors, shapes, line and texture. It’s ever-changing.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In 2011 we moved to Denver from Boston. That’s when my art journey began. I started out doing fine art photography. I was connecting with people through meet up groups and workshops. In some of the workshops, I discovered some software programs that allowed me to take liberties with my photographs and turn them into abstract art. In 2013 I took my first private painting class. I was hooked. I struggled with being afraid I would make a mistake. But I’m learning now how to play and be free and it makes all the difference in the finished product. Now I have put the camera down and picked up the paintbrush and any other tools that will move the paint around. I love to try new things, so the medium is ever-changing. Because this is kind of new to me, in the beginning, I had difficulty saying I was an artist. I did some art exhibits and my art was selling. That’s the validation I needed and now I can’t stop creating. I have converted some of my art to apparel and home goods.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
I am a contemporary abstract artist. I am very proud of the art community we have built here in Stapleton. I am a co-founder and past board chair of Stapleton Artists, a non-profit organization. Stapleton Artists organization produces Stapleton Open Studios, a free self-guided tour where artists invite you to see demonstrations, works in progress and finished art pieces as they welcome you into their artistic process in an up-close and personal way. This occurs the last weekend in September each year.
I’m passionate about paying it forward and doing art for good. I’m currently having an art sale and donating 100% of the proceeds to Covid-19 related causes. https://www.flipsnack.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I feel like I have lived a charmed life. Luck has definitely played a huge role in every aspect of my life. I’m glad I have been able to accept the opportunities as they came my way. Living the best life.
