Meet Katie Altneu, L.Ac., MSOM and FABORM of The Point Acupuncture & Holistic Medicine in Washington Park/Platt Park/Old South Pearl Street

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Altneu, L.Ac., MSOM, FABORM.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Katie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I never expected to end up doing what I’m doing. My background is in economics and finance, and now I’m an acupuncturist and women’s health specialist!

I first discovered the healing power of acupuncture when I had health issues of my own – stubborn period and digestive complaints that had bugged me for years. My doctors said everything was “fine” and that nothing was wrong… but I was certain that I wasn’t meant to be feeling the way I was feeling. So, I tried acupuncture because I was desperate for SOMETHING to help… and to my surprise, it HELPED!

I was blown away and grateful, but also kind of pissed off that I hadn’t heard of or tried acupuncture sooner when it was obviously so effective. So, I immediately quit my job as a financial analyst and enrolled in graduate school in Boulder to study Acupuncture, making it my mission to bring this amazing medicine to more people. My parents freaked out of course because I had graduated magna cum laude from a prestigious liberal arts school and attended the London School of Economics… and here I was “throwing that all away.” But it was the best decision and I’m so glad I took that plunge and followed my heart.

A lot of people don’t realize that the training to become an acupuncturist is so rigorous – it takes four years of graduate school to become a master acupuncturist and herbalist. It’s a complex and beautiful system of diagnosing, understanding, and treating the body… and it takes a long time to really become good at it. But once you master it, you can address so many things from pain, headaches, and injuries to IBS, anxiety, and fertility.

In a world where conventionally unexplainable problems like pain, anxiety, fatigue, infertility, and autoimmune disease are on the rise, I feel like holistic medicine is the solution everyone needs. And it makes me so happy to be able to help. It’s so fulfilling to be able to walk patients through their suffering to the other side so they can feel like themselves again, experience more freedom, achieve their dreams, and live the life they dream of.

My clinic, The Point Acupuncture & Holistic Medicine, is on Old South Pearl Street near Washington Park in Denver. I love the community in our charming neighborhood. I have two associates on staff who are amazing. And I’ve created an online program called Becoming Mama that helps women to support their fertility holistically. I feel passionate about empowering women with the resources they need to take control of their fertility, health, bodies, and lives. Since so many women are, like I was, being told that their suffering is “normal” and “fine” (forehead smack). Turns out, there’s a lot more to it than that.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh yes, there were challenges of course. Being a business owner is one of the best self-improvement tools available. Haha, it sounds funny but it’s true. It has forced me to confront my limiting beliefs, insecurities, and fears in a unique and powerful way. And that’s what I think the biggest challenge has been – my own self.

I’ve had to learn to step into my own self-worth as a healer. It was hard for me to learn to accept payment for my work, I wanted to give it away for free! I’ve had to learn to honor my own boundaries. It was hard for me to say no and not work after-hours or on weekends in order to help someone in need. I’ve had to learn to let myself be seen. It felt scary and vulnerable to put my beliefs and perspective out there for others to potentially judge. But that’s what it takes to make an impact.

It was hard to learn those lessons, and I’m sure I have more to learn, but it has been invaluable and I’m so grateful for this growth. Now, I’m better at honoring myself and my boundaries, and at allowing myself to truly and deeply show up in order to serve the world. It’s helped me tap into a level of confidence and meaning that I didn’t know was possible for me.

Please tell us about The Point Acupuncture & Holistic Medicine – what should we know?
The Point Acupuncture & Holistic medicine is a boutique acupuncture clinic known for our skilled acupuncturists, warm atmosphere, and effective and compassionate care. We are especially great at treating fertility and hormonal health, anxiety and mental health, digestive issues, and pain. We also offer a natural alternative to Botox – facial acupuncture.

We pride ourselves on our level of professional care, quality service, and peaceful clinic. No flaky hippies here, we are on our game and deliver our best. We are organized, efficient, and responsive – no extra stress here!

We believe in personalized care and attention and take as much time as is needed to talk with our patients and get a solid understanding of their history, symptoms, and unique situation. And we think it’s very important to spend time working on diet and lifestyle choices that will help get results. We’ve created an online program, Becoming Mama, to help our patients support their fertility holistically on their own, at home. Which is incredibly powerful. Denver’s top fertility doctors and reproductive endocrinologists refer their patients to us for a reason. We take great care of our patients – AND we help them get great results.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think that Brene Brown is the best business coach around… even though she’s not technically a business coach at all, haha, but a professor and researcher of vulnerability, empathy, and courage.

I think those are the key ingredients to success: vulnerability and our ability to really show up, connect, and create a business that is deeply in alignment with who we are at our core; Empathy and our ability to listen to others’ needs so we can truly serve them; and the courage to go for it, speak our truth, and risk uncertainty, failure, and judgement.

Something that I think has contributed to my success is that I get to spend my day living out my “love language” – listening to and connecting with people. It comes naturally to me and it fills my “cup” and makes me so happy.

I feel so lucky to get to do this work and grateful to my patients who’ve trusted me and taught me so much.
