Meet Katie Renon of The Labor of Love Co. in Parker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Renon.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, my mom was practicing as a naturopathic doctor and this optimistic outlook on health was ingrained in my mind from a young age. I’ve always firmly believed that the body is resilient and strong with the right care. I’ve carried this notion with me as a birthing mother and now in my work with birthing families.

Prior to creating The Labor of Love Co. I came from a financial services background. But when I was pregnant with my daughter I dove headfirst into all things childbirth and fell in love with the birthing world. My son was born seventeen months after my daughter, and soon thereafter I had an itch to start my own business. I started creating Care Packages for new and expecting mamas.

This started as a passion project while I was working from home but gradually picked up speed. As the business grew, I knew I wanted to be more involved in the personal side of birth and came across Birth Boot Camp, which provides a comprehensive, in-depth curriculum. I received my certification as a Birth Boot Camp Instructor and began teaching courses to individual couples and groups. I get to consult parents during one of the most significant times of their life and I love every minute of it.

The two sides of the business have played well off of each other and I’ve now been able to make this my full-time gig. Still, my favorite role is being a mother and I’ve been lucky to be home with my kiddos while building this business.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road of a business owner is never perfectly smooth, but the bumps along the way are great learning opportunities. I’ve been blessed with unconditional support of those around me who have helped me navigate every little bump along the way.

My biggest struggle has been figuring out how much time to devote to my business. At the beginning, I was working full-time from home while caring for my two little ones, and trying to launch a business on the side. I truly loved the company I worked for, and of course I was fully devoted as a mother to my two babies. But after a while, it became clear that I needed to fully dedicate my time to my business, which has been a huge blessing and has taken the company to a whole new level.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Labor of Love Co. – what should we know?
The ultimate goal of The Labor of Love Co. is to improve maternal health. I try to achieve this through two different avenues:

First, I create Care Packages for pregnant and new mothers. We all know Baby gets the spotlight, and rightfully so. But Mama really needs to practice self-pampering as well. My Care Packages are specific to each trimester to give Mama the necessary care at each point of her pregnancy and postpartum. I carefully select natural and organic products to ensure both Mama and Baby are getting the best nourishment they can. I hand pack each Package and ship it straight to Mama’s door. These tokens of love really go a long way during this season of Mama’s life.

Additionally, I am a Certified Childbirth Educator. I teach the Birth Boot Camp curriculum, which is just as intensive as it sounds. Remember: this is one of the most physically and emotionally tolling events in a parent’s life. My philosophy as an Educator is that the best way to achieve the birth you want is through preparation. No two births are the same and each family has different needs. I aim to empower both Mom and Partner with the information they’ll need to make informed choices in partnership with their care provider. I teach multi-session courses, one-time workshops, and offer hourly consultations. All of these options are available in-person or via video call. I hope to see the discussion of childbirth normalized and for parents to feel confident with their birthing experiences.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My biggest cheerleader is my husband. He has an innate ability to motivate others and he’s been the one who was adamant that my company would thrive, even when I wasn’t sure it could. Plus, he gave me my two babies who are my ultimate reason WHY. I’m blessed with fabulous family and friends who give me encouragement, advice, and feedback.

I’m so thankful to Birth Boot Camp as an organization not only for providing an incredible curriculum, but also a fabulous network of teammates. The BBC family is comprised of doulas and instructors across the country who know that a rising tide lifts all boats.

I couldn’t do what I do without the companies from which I source products for my Care Packages. They put so much love and care into the products they create, and their dedication makes me confident that Mamas will be nurtured when it is most important.

Lastly, I am forever grateful to the organizations for which I have worked in the past. I’ve been lucky to always work for small businesses and these experiences have given me invaluable insight into the life of an entrepreneur.
