Today we’d like to introduce you to Keisha Mathes.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Keisha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I had an interest in living a healthier life and in natural remedies that came to fruition about 10-15 years before because of my mom’s personal health struggles. She had been sick the majority of my life and also has a laundry list of allergies that were discovered and brought about by the various western medicine treatments she was subjected to. I can remember having nightmares and being afraid as a child that each time she went into the hospital that she wasn’t going to come home. Once she stepped away from all the medications and started on a natural medicine path she finally started to get relief from her symptoms and has been in remission for almost 20 years now. I started out formulating for family and friends over a decade ago. In that time I have been able to help so many people I love to find the help needed through safer means.
Fast forward to today and my youngest son was my inspiration to launch my business over a year ago. I wanted more freedom within how and where I work. I am not doing less work as an entrepreneur by far I am doing much more, but I am much happier doing something I am passionate about. Besides, stepping out on faith and into my purpose helped me come to a place of completion in a long-running health struggle I was having. Feeling and being whole now opens me up to do even more for others and offer Reiki as well.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has definitely been very bumpy. When I initially had the idea for this business I was in an abusive marriage and my husband at the tie refused to allow me to do it. I have never run a business and what I do I steeped so much in creativity it was a serious learning curve. Even though I am detail-oriented some of the finer points took a bit longer for me to put into action. I am grateful for the training I was able to take the Black Business Initiative and the 1 on 1 coaching with Sistahpreneurs. Makisha was a key factor in helping me revamp my brand and tell my story. One of the funniest stories we share is when it was time to discuss my old logo and how that didn’t fit into my brand identity. I was married to it since it was something I developed while in my marriage and there were definitely some tears. I trusted her and that we were in sync with my vision and where I wanted to go. Getting out into marketplaces with consumers and discussing my product was probably the easiest part of this journey just because I am so in love with what I do and wanting to help others.
Please tell us about your business.
At Herbal Honey we don’t just create loose-leaf teas, tinctures, honeys, vinegars, salves and custom formulations. We also provide medicinal self-care remedies for your overwhelmed, exhausted and ailing body. Right now we have limited our product base primarily to tea, and herb-infused honey. The thing that makes us unique is that each of our formulas was created with intention for the user. What sets Herbal Honey’s products apart from the competition are its organic products, – we source our herbs from suppliers around the globe, seeking products that are either farmed organically or wild-crafted. Conventional farming methods, which involve pesticides and fertilizers, can deplete the soil and led to a far less potent product that lacks vital nutrients. In addition, more than 50% of the herbs we use are grown using sustainable practices.
Honey Herbal brings you unmatched expertise and the ability to tailor new formulas that come from over a decade of formulating products and cross-referencing them for safety against the most current knowledge of known interactions. Each product we make is formulated with a specific health need in mind, and customers can unbundle our offerings to formulate a custom product tailored to address their individual needs and ailments.
We have three product lines; Feminine Energy, Masculine Vitality, and General Health and Wellness.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over I would have started sooner! Lol, I really love what I do but I know that God’s timing is perfect so I am just trying to enjoy each step of the ups and downs of this journey so that I can give that back into another entrepreneur down the road. I don’t think there is anything I would do differently if I got a do-over.
