Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Meyers.
Keith, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been in the board game industry for over three decades. In that time, I’ve worked for small and large publishing companies including IELLO, Wizards of the Coast, and Hasbro; the largest retail chain of game stores, I’ve had published around three dozen games in multiple languages around the world, I’ve taught classes in game design and written a book on getting your game published.
Then about ten years ago, I was in Toronto and saw a board game café called Snakes & Lattes. I thought it was the perfect model of what I had spent most of life working towards getting people to the table to play games, have fun, and open up conversations. It took about six years to get the Board Game Republic open. It’s now been over three and a half years and people are filling tables, gaming, eating and drinking, and having fun!
Has it been a smooth road?
There were a few starts and stops to getting open, securing the right funding, and choosing the right space, but we knew we had a hit once we got the doors open.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a board game social house with full bar and light kitchen. Our library of games features about 1,000 titles. We welcome EVERYONE to the table – board games do not judge people. They don’t see what a person looks like or what they believe. They are just happy that people are gathered together sharing a human experience over some boards, cards and dice.
We offer a robust Colorado beer menu with specialty cocktails and shakes. And a menu of flatbread pizzas, toasted sub, and power bowls. There is a $5 cover for all who come to Board Game Republic. But I think what we are most known for is how we help people find and learn games. Our wait staff are also trained as Play Pros. We are happy to make recommendations for games and, as time permits, happy to teach games, saving the time and frustration of having to read rules.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Denver is a great place for starting your own business. They have many great resources that can help get you started. Many food chains have begun here in Denver. I think there is always room for new, creative concepts. But do your homework and make sure you have plans in place for the long haul.
