Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly-Page Spencer.
Hi Kelly, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was a kid I was obsessed with my mom’s old dollhouse from her childhood. I would pose all the characters and take photos of them or set up little scenes and write stories for them to “act out”. As I got older, I started getting more into photography and started taking dark room in high school where I would spend every free hour and lunch hour in the dark room developing photos. Towards the end of high school I started taking a film class and fell in love with moving photos as well. I decided to go to film school as University of Colorado Denver where I fell in love with writing and production design. I made sets, props and costumes for my classmate’s film projects as well as my own. After graduating I got several jobs on some bigger named feature length films as a production designer and costume designer. I also have my own photography business and love taking photos in my spare time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the most difficult part of being in the arts is that I want to do everything. I love making props and costumes, I love writing and storytelling, I love a huge range of genres within photography and film, I love drawing and painting, I love playing the piano and writing music. Needless to say I just turned 25 and still haven’t quite found my niche within the photography or film community and I still find myself in the experimental “playing” phase of making a career out of art. Additionally, finding my voice as a female in the film industry has been a challenge and has made me grow a lot as a person and learn a lot about communication and confidence in my role on sets.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In the film industry I am most currently known for my production design work, mostly in costume design. This year I wrote and directed my own short film titled “The Boy Next Door”. I am very proud of that short as it was my first solo project outside of film school that I had complete creative control over. I am looking forward to its release, hopefully by the end of this year. One thing that sets me apart in my work as a costume, prop and set designer is that I thrift almost every item I use. I believe in making art the least harmful to the environment that it can possibly be and, in turn, I have the creative freedom to combine elements into something brand new that have never been seen before. In the photography world I specialize in a wide range of genres such as weddings, engagements, family photography, headshots, and my own creative work. I love working with people to capture photos that will be in their family for generations to come to tell the stories that are important to them. In my creative work I tend towards the “creepy” and “weird” side of life as well as documentation of the things that are happening in our world. Like my brain, my art is all over the place and still in its adolescence.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I listen to the “My Favorite Murder” podcast when I’m editing photos, writing, sewing costumes, etc. Dark comedy is one of my favorite genres to write and create for and that podcast is as dark and comical as it gets. And, although it makes me a basic ‘B word’ I am in love with Pinterest. It allows me to organize all my visual inspiration into separate categories that are presented in a super ‘clean’ way that makes my OCD very happy. I can also share vision boards with people I am working on film/photography sets with so it is a very effective visual tool to collaborate with.
