Meet Kendra Prospero of Turning the Corner in Central Denver & Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Prospero.

Kendra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been curious why people do the work they do. I remember when my parents had a dinner party and I asked their friends, “What do you do? Do you like it? Why would you do something that you hate?” at which point I was sent out of the room. I spent many years searching for my own true career passion. I went to college with the hope of becoming an actor and musician and ended up focusing in software engineering instead. I worked for many years as a developer and project manager for IBM but felt I was struggling in a career that left me dying on the vine. On the side, I spent years counseling coworkers on their careers, giving resume advice and bringing talented people together. I helped many people land great positions in fields they are passionate about and are thriving in. In 2011, I decided to go out on a limb and open a business doing this. I had noticed over the years that recruiting and HR weren’t done the way I thought it should be done, and I decided to try to fix these fields.

After developing my own process, I discovered I had a true gift for helping other people identify their strengths and passions in the workplace. Turning the Corner is a result of me following my own passions to help others as the CEO and Founder of one of the few firms in the nation that supports both job seekers and businesses.

Turning the Corner has enabled amazing companies to increase their profits, raise employee engagement, and lower attrition. We specialize in Recruiting, Management Training, HR Services, 360 Reviews, Outplacement Services, Resumes and Coaching.

I have also found myself back on the stage, but instead of singing and dancing, now I inspire people to think differently about their approach to leading, hiring, and managing. I’ve been able to present all around the country for organizations, associations, chambers, companies, and universities.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road at all! I’ve had many challenges that made me question everything at times. Right after I opened the business, I found out that I was pregnant with a son, but unfortunately, we lost him at 24 weeks. After that loss, we experienced seven miscarriages until we were pregnant again with our son James. His pregnancy was fraught with difficulty and needless to say, the business suffered next to us. I was not able to do any work for a few months and since I was the only seller, we struggled to make payroll. I’ve had countless sleepless nights figuring out how to get us to profitability.

In 2016, I had the blow of my life when I found my only brother died of a heroin overdose. He was my best friend – we were supposed to grow old together – and now he was gone. Once again, I struggled to keep the business floating while also deeply grieving. Miraculously, I had a team that knew exactly what was needed and even though I was absent for over six months, this time, we grew all because of my amazing team.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Turning the Corner – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I think we give up the best hours of our days and the best years of our lives for work, and we should love our jobs. I founded Turning the Corner in 2011 to help people connect to work they love and to end suffering in the workplace. My team helps companies fully support their employees and helps individuals find jobs they are passionate about. I believe that people who love their jobs are happier, more productive, easier to manage, and are all-around better workers. Turning the Corner helps people and businesses transform the way they think and feel about work.

We work with growing businesses to help them get the most from their employees. We specialize in recruiting, HR consulting, team building, and management training.

We also serve people who are on a job search. We help them understand what they are great at and how the market needs their strengths, help them with marketing themselves with a great resume, LinkedIn profile, and networking strategy, and finally how to interview to get an offer.

I absolutely love my team – we are made up of HR consultants, recruiters, resume writers, coaches, and trainers – and we eat our own “dog food”! We were just awarded a “Top Place to Work” award by the Denver Business Journal.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My only future plan is to continue to grow. I have found my calling and I can’t imagine doing anything else other than this work. I deeply love how we help people, and I want to do everything I can to make an impact and end suffering in the workplace.
