Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenzie Culver.
Kenzie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Actually, my story goes all the way back to 16 years ago! When I was four years old, I was rushed to Denver Children’s Hospital for emergency brain surgery. I had been diagnosed with Chiari Malformation and Syringomyelia, two conditions that affect the brain’s position and the flow of spinal fluid (and ironically, a common side effect is vocal cord paralysis…) As I was recovering, I had friends and family members gather around me. They all sang songs and played music to help get my mind off the difficult recovery process. It was in those moments that my love and passion for music was born. There was something so healing about the sound that flowed through the room. I then wrote my first song at 13 and began the journey I’m on now.
Currently, my hope is to spread that same healing feeling to others through my music. Whether you’re going through a break up, struggling with mental health, or just having one of those days, I hope my music can provide solace and understanding. I don’t want to tell anyone to just “be happy”. I want to come meet them in those hard and dark places and just sit with them. Your feelings are valid and it’s okay to FEEL them for a little while.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s certainly NOT been an easy ride. I have struggled with my own self-doubt first and foremost, and I continue to struggle with it daily. Am I good enough to be a musician? Am I stable enough to be a shoulder for others to lean on? I think often those questions arise just to be a distraction. Anyone can learn to master their craft, and anyone can go through all the therapy in the world to be the most “stable person”. But that defeats my purpose. It’s in the imperfections, the mistakes, the shortcomings that we find meaning and connection.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am an Alt-Pop Artist. If you’re a fan of Billie Eilish, Lennon Stella, or Hayley Williams, you may resonate with my writing. My most streamed song is my current single “I Worry”, but a close second is “I’m Sorry That I” which you may recognize if you’re a music nerd for KTCL 93.3. “I’m Sorry That I” was the Hometown for the Holidays 2018 Winner and I played 2019’s Not So Silent Night at Mission Ballroom! I would say that’s my most sobering experience as a performer, to know that there were and are people out there who believe in me that deeply. My proudest moment is after that show, all the people who came to me saying that the message of my music had really impacted them in some way. The tears were flowing hard that night because that’s all I want to do with my music.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I am so lucky to have grown up in the Denver and Fort Collins music scenes. They are the first to step behind you as an artist, lift you up, and push you to be your best. They are fiercely loyal to their local artists and the amount of effort they put in to having an enthusiastic attitude about local music is amazing. I couldn’t imagine having started anywhere else. With my time now split between Nashville and Denver, I want to take the time to thank everyone in the Colorado music scene who has reached out to help members of the Nashville scene after our recent tornado devastation. It feels amazing to have family in both places and I’m especially proud of my Colorado family rushing to aid those in need.
