Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellicia Morse.
Kellicia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Kermo Photography and Design all started as a young girl who got her hands on her Dad’s camera. I couldn’t have anyone take it away from me taking random photographs of my day-to-day life. Fast forward a few years as a senior in high school, I finally took photography as an elective and found my true calling.
I went to college at Adams State University where I double-majored in Art with an emphasis in photography, graphic design, and business advertising. I was headed into the world of being a creative businesswoman! In my first year, I became the event photographer for the school. I went to most of the on-campus events capturing moments of students, faculty and community members laughing, learning, and just having a wonderful time.
One day, a student studying music asked me to take photographs of him and his rock band. I agreed and had so much fun following them around in the music building. I turned in a few of my favorite images into my mentor and boss at the time, Linda Relyea, and she absolutely loved them! One of the images ended up being on the cover of the AStater magazine. I knew from that moment that capturing people’s true personality was the right path for me. I continued to pick up more odd jobs for other students and community members- photographing their family, artwork, special events, and even weddings.
Once I graduated, I started working for various portrait studios around Denver and picked up gigs to help photograph weddings while having a full-time position. Helping photograph weddings is where the real magic started for me! I learned so much with hands-on experience with other amazing photographers. I am very proud of my journey and will never stop learning new techniques or trying new things to enhance other people’s stories.
Even today, I still have the same excitement that I had as a child. When I see my phone ring and see that it’s one of my clients or potential clients, I get so excited to learn about their vision and how they want to express themselves. If you have a special event coming up or would like to have a fun lifestyle portrait, I would be happy to be there to share your story!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road of life as a creative business owner is always an adventure! There are ups and downs and all types of interesting turns along the way. For me in my business, the most challenging thing is to be confident and really put myself out there as a small business owner and saying, “Hey, I’m a photographer and you should hire me as your photographer because I am going to capture your true personality and be there at your special moments throughout life.”
Even though there are the nice busy summer/ fall seasons, it can be challenging to find work during the slower winter months. The one great thing about Colorado is that there are so many nice sunny days, so the “slow” session is only a few months out of the year.
In our current situation with the pandemic, I really have had to be adaptable and flexible. I offer new packages that include small intimate backyard weddings or have had to wait to do an interior designer photography session because the furniture hasn’t arrived yet. I try to be as accommodating during these times as much as possible. I also make sure to check in with my clients more often to make sure that there are not many changes to their original plans. This really helps them feel at ease and confident that I am going to be there for them. Some clients have come to me interested in having me be their wedding photographer for 7 hours, but then they find out a month before that they have to reschedule or move their wedding plans to different locations. My reaction is “No problem, let’s make this work!”
Kermo Photography & Design – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Kermo Photography & Design is a business that specializes in wedding/ event photography, lifestyle portrait photography, and design (including interior design, real estate, and architecture photography & more).
I call myself a local here in Colorado, been here since I was about 2.5 years old and will always call Colorado my home. I am a city girl filled with adventure and curiosity with the world. In my free time, you can find me being active outside, creating new designs, or going on an adventure, but of course with my camera in my hand.
My background and life is surrounded around photography. I cannot go on an adventure or go to an event without one of my cameras in my hand. I graduated with honors from Adams State University with bachelor degrees in Business Advertising, Photography, & Graphic Design. I have more than seven years of professional experience photographing events and portraits. My work is published in various magazines, booklets, and websites.
I am most proud of capturing real emotions and like to bring out my client’s true personalities and style. My style is full of color and excitement that makes people connect with others in a positive way. Something that is extremely important in this day and age.
I am an endeavor; always learning, expanding, and creating something new. It is a good day if I make someone smile; it’s a spectacular day if I can capture it in a photograph! Contact me so we can make your dream spectacular!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I strive to make connections with my potential clients and show them that I do truly care for their own success and happiness. I love being able to capture my client’s emotions and their individual personalities, whether it’s of them on their special wedding day, taking their lifestyle headshots for their own business, or capturing their unique work. It’s exciting to me to want to truly capture them and show them how beautiful they are or how beautiful their work is. If I can not only see their beauty but am able to capture it in a photograph, then that is my success!
